Since nowhere in the new or old testament is there a mention of alien life, how do you think religionists who believe in the bible are going to handle it when the announcement comes that we have found life on other planets?

When they come? Or if they come?

I'm reminded of the saying from the movie Contact "The universe is a huge, and it'd be an awful waste of space if we were the only ones living in it." ;)

I personally believe in the form of alien life... however not to the sci-fi extent where they have protruding eyes and small body frames... I'm sure that there are some primitive organisms in other planets and that one day these organisms will develope into a more advanced life form (like we human beings). Whether they have already or not is just a speculation at this point in time.

The belief is that the Bible is the word of God... and that if there is something that is missing from the bible , then present-day followers will have a hard time to grasp the dealings that is to come - if indeed they do come. But I'm sure you can understand that God will be the ultimate ruler in their eyes... believers will speculate that God created the Aliens too, even.

Just speculation at this point in time... you might want to consult a priesthood for more definitive answers though - I'm kind of a non-religious guy myself - I mean I believe in God - I just don't know why, so when those people knock at my door and try to convert me, I'm confused as to what is really going on :Q... they realize this after a few minutes then leave me w/ my forums :D

can you specifically state which theistic belief, and more specifically which doctrine in the belief or religious text that serves as a foundation for the doctrine does a proposed discovery of alien sentience contradict?

not necessarily a believer, but i can say that i am more than knowledgable of the Bible and i know that John says that if all the things Christ alone communicated were written down there would not be enough room for it on the earth, with this in mind i dont see why a joe smoe christian would have any trouble dealing with aliens, i dont think many christians want to deny logic and if a couple of aliens actually show themselves to someone other than the drunks in louisiana then i guess there would be a lot more believers in aliens

yeah yeah... read my post, but take it with a grain of salt. I'm going to post and not come back in here just because I simply don't care.

I used to think that aliens were demons. Ever seen a demon? Ever seen an angel? I've seen sh!t you people wouldn't believe.

BTW, I did not vote. My option isn't in there. ;)

Don't mind ImTyping; he's still upset after his experience on the same mother ship that abducted dennilfloss. It seems the experiments the aliens performed robbed him of his last remaining shred of common sense.

Way down south where the peanuts grow,
A peanut stepped on an elephant's toe,
The elephant cried with tears in its eyes,
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"

I'm a nut,
I'm a nut,
I'm a nut, I'm a nut, I'm a nut, nut, nut!

(repeat indefinitely)

I read an actual academic paper that suggested that the temple in Ezekiel is a UFO (this is serious). Therefore. I think that beleivers could use that to rationaliuze ;)

"Now as I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel upon the earth beside the living creatures one for each of the four of them. As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction ... the four had the same likeness being as it were a wheel within a wheel. The four wheels had rims and they had spokes, and their rims were full of eyes round about. And when the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them and when the living creatures went, the wheels went with them, for the living creature was in the wheel." Ezekiel 1

Anyone old enough to remember the TV series: Project Ble Book?

ImTyping's real name is Anne Heche.

I guess this is what seti@home brought to the forums... rc5 attracted fewer crazy people.

There is no contradiction, there are plenty of things the bible doesn't mention. It doesn't have to be an all-inclusive list of species for it to be accurate.

Do I believe aliens exist? No.

Would I care if it turned out they did? No.

As long as they keep their probes away from my ass, & I can buy a spaceship for the same price as a Honda, I'll be happy.

ImTyping, why do you assume all "believers" are Christian? Personally, I think Christians are about as narrow minded as you, where God's will is concerned!

ImTyping, I think you had people like this in mind when you was talking about how zealots would handle the existance of extraterrestrial life?

There's still a lot more chance that extraterrestrial life exists than any god(s), namely about 90% (give or take 5) and 0% respectively.

God this is the lowest point we've ever hit in terms of reasonable discussion about religion.

This is simply pathetic.

I personally believe that there are very likely alien lifeforms. Similar to why Carl Sagan did. I'm also very religious as you know.

Oops.

Sheesh... you aren't even trying anymore, are you? You just seem to be sitting in the corner screaming now because no one is listening to you.

BTW, the Bible doesn't mention the existance of Radio waves either, so I guess I've already "reconciled the contradiction".

This is pathetic. Is this what heppens when you run out of the ability to discuss things like an adult?

<< and 0% respectively. >>

Any scientist worth his salt knows there is nothing we can declare has a 0% chance of existing/happening.

Whether aliens exist or not is moot, but I think this thread has some merit to it. I've seen the christian literature and met people who dismiss talk of aliens as deceptions of Satan or perhaps the aliens are actual demons of Hell.

Personally, I think it very likely that there are other inhabited planets in this vast universe.
