I'm in need of an inexpensive subwoofer so I did a little research over on the AVS board and noticed that a few people seemed to really like the H-100. The price is really good and the specs seem decent as well:

500w
24-200hz

Anyone here own of these subwoofers? Are you happy with it?

Here's a couple of links to the subwoofer

http://www.acoustechspeakers.c...and=1&type=8&spkrID=26

http://www.acousticsounddesign...uct.cfm?pid=1062&sc=32

I'm also considering these as well:

Elemental Design - A2-250 - 300.00
200w 18-100hz

Velodyne - VRP-1200 - looking for a price on this one
130w 29-140hz

AVS123 - X-Sub - 199.99
150w 28-150hz

hmm I was afraid of this. So will I need 2 subwoofers to get good sound? I have a really big room to fill with sound (23x26, 9ft ceilings)

That's a large space you're working with...

Are you replacing a sub you're currently using or is this your first setup?

Are you going to be listening to things really loudly? It's going to take a lot of sub to get things really going in a space that large.

Thinking about your options... are you open to buying used as well? What's your budget you're shooting for?

If this was for me, I'd be thinking a couple nice 12" subs at least.

this is my first setup, I'm working on a really limited budget. In fact I went with Fluance speakers, although I realize now I could have found some better ones in the same price range.

not really, I have 2 small kids (2 weeks and 1 year) so I can't really crank it too loud around the little tykes.

I would'nt mind buying used, but I would prefer to do it locally. My money is pretty tight these days but I could possibly manage 300-400 right now. Things will probably change drastically in a few months but I'm a little anxious to set something up now.

The BIC is probably a good idea for you then. You can get them pretty reasonably from ebay with the make an offer from the place that sells a lot of them from what I understand.

I guess you have a few options though

Get a really cheap one now (Dayton?) and then when funds are available, take that one out and get a solid sub

Get a medium one (BIC?) and then later decide if you want to either
-add a second one
-replace it with a better one

Stretch the budget now and try to get the best one you can afford now

Depending on your listening habits, a single BIC might be enough for you too.

Are you a DIY kind of guy btw? That's a great way to get the best bang for your buck with subs.
I'm not really, so I just went used on my subs with good results.

If you aren't afraid of a few tools and building a relatively simple enclosure, definitely go DIY.

Do note that the 500W spec for the H-100 is merely the dynamic max output, not the RMS rating...which is a measly 150W. You can get a true 240W RMS amp for $99 from PE (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...m?&Partnumber=300-804).

Or a 500W amp for $159 (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...m?&Partnumber=300-752).

And you can get a nice 15" driver for $159 (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...m?&Partnumber=295-468).

I'm not really, so I just went used on my subs with good results.

Sure you are, you just don't know it. :p

I guess I was afraid of getting a Frankenstein's Monster looking sub next to my rockets ;)

Hey, whatever works...ask iamwiz82 for pictures of the sonosub enclosure that I sold him a few years back. Ugly as sin, but hey, with the 15" Tempest it did the job just fine.

I'm working on a bunch of DIY stuff right now and my basement looks like the parts department of an electronics shop exploded.

Maybe when I move out of apartment living and actually have some sort of storage / workspace area and my theater area doesn't have to by my computer room, livingroom, and diningroom... then I'll think about it ;)

sounds like the BIC is my best choice, although I just found out about a audio place in Chicago that has a selection of used subs. I'm tempted to take a ride down there this afternoon.

What kind of work do you do Jello? I was looking at your pics online and noticed you have nice set of monitors on your work desk, are you a sound engineer?

Those are just a set of bookshelf speakers powered by a sonic t-amp that Kaido was nice enough to get me for Christmas.

I work at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research on very non-sound related work.

So you have to deal with NCES a lot I gather?

Not me personally at least. I mainly help with research projects and contact individual schools or DPI from time to time.

(I'm still going to school myself)

I own the H100 and love it. I don't believe you can do better without paying more.
