Question for sys admins - what is this product?

So basically, neither of you two knows how this magic lump of metal (or whatever it's supposed to be) actually activates the system 😛.

Maybe it's a red herring, and the real "activation thingy" is just a piece of paper with some serial numbers inside the little cardboard box? And hockey puck is a paperweight?

At first glance my thought was "maybe it's a specially sealed tin so nobody can see the serial until it reaches the end user?"

How would you open it then? I don't see any grooves running along the outer edge to let you open it up with a can opener.

Maybe it senses body heat, then it scans you when you lift it in your hands, and if you are worthy, the otherwise impenetrable metal hide will open like a delicate flower, revealing the delicious serial key inside?

Of course...it all makes perfect sense now ...

No more using low-tech methods, like e-mailing customers their serial keys!

Well, an email can be hacked or read by someone unworthy that the magical serial-key giving orb would otherwise reject (possibly turn to stone if they tried to open it).

That is amazing. I can't believe we've gone back to "hiding the money in the mattress" in this day and age of encrypted emails, etc.

"We've encased the activation code in this here block of concrete...which weighs 120 pounds. Shipping charges from your nearest authorized Intel dealer will apply. "

WTF?

It apparently plugs into the motherboard or a special expansion card, depending on the motherboard. Here is an Intel PDF for a similar product that includes drawings of how it plugs in. Presumably it contains a chip that tells the board it has Intel's permission to use RAID.

Wow, it's tiny...

I think we all assumed it was several inches in diameter, like a can of tuna or something. It looks like it's more BIOS-battery sized, and it has a similar socket. I wonder what the bottom looks like. I also don't really understand why you buy this "RAID activation key" separately, or why you must buy a key at all if you already bought the hardware.

Oh well, at least that cleared up something. Thanks for the link !
