Question for runners...

Odd question I thought of as I though back to my gym class days... I remember when we always did the 12 minute runs to see how many laps we could get... I would always be really tired toward the end... but during the last like 30 seconds I would push myself to start sprinting. When I did this, I went kinda numb almost.. like blocking out all the physical pain, and it felt like almost no effort to be sprinting. My question is, if you were to do this for a long period of time, would you pass out or something? It's a weird question, but your input is appreciated. Thanks!

Yep, sounds like the adrenaline kicking in. Try doing a 400m under 60 seconds (hard for many people) and you'll feel the pain. If you try sprinting the last 50-75 m of 3 mile race after giving it your best, you will need to throw up and it happens to the best of runners as well. If not then you are probably not pushing yourself 😉.

EDIT: Which reminds me, I should start running again 🙂

Not sure what causes the vomitting, but all I know is when I sprint the last 100 meters of my 3 mile run (5 days a week) I feel great! I don't vomit, but I get really light headed for about 5 seconds and then I feel fine again. Adrenaline and Endorphines rock!

While on the topic of running, I've heard that running is the best exercise for dropping pounds/losing the chubb. Is this true? What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to get started? What would I need besides running shoes and sweatpants?

Running/biking/swimming....great ways to lose weight. lol what do I recommend? Just go out and do it. Good shoes help, but aren't a necessity. Don't get dehydrated.

A doctor's physical! Don't want to do damage when you have the motivation to start exercising. Start with something low impact like walking and move yourself up the chain. Remember to swing those arms too! They are about 20% of your workout when walking (Fist clenched, elbows at 90 degrees). This way you will build up a little cardiovascular fitness and wont be discouraged when you can't run a 7 minute mile off the line. Your muscles will also be adjusted to working for longer periods and won't get as sore when you start to run.

It's also known as a runner's high. I don't know about the vomitting part. It's only happened to me once.... (I used to run track in high school).

The reason running is so good is because you can do it anywhere and all it requires is shoes. Other sports take longer setup times and aren't always aerobic exercises. The key to running is not to run as far as you can, but to get to your target heart-rate for a period of time long enough to raise its overall rate. I once read in a book that weight loss can be sped up significantly by running 12-14 minutes since your overall gain per minute of running will decrease after that. So based on that, I ran 2 miles, 3 times a day, 3 days a week. And they were 7 minute miles....not rushing it or anything. Doing that and eating a low-fat diet with lots of carbs I was able to drop 10 pounds in about a month. Of course, I could have easily dropped more, but I'm 6'4" and look kinda skinny even though I weigh 218-220 now...
