Question for New Yorkers

My sister is moving to NYC in two weeks and I've been asked to research ISPs for her.
I figured that this would be the best place to ask. Could anyone who lives in the area
recommend a good dial-up (or reasonably affordable broadband) provider?

Thanks. :)

With cable TV - optonline (T1 speeds on cable, literally 900kbytes download, 115 kbytes upload) for $40
Without cable TV - $50

OptOnline Website

I'm using it right now. INCREDIBLE speeds for $40.

Edit: There's also verizon ($50 a month for crap speeds) if where she's moving doesn't have optonline. But all of LI does.
Um...all the standard fare dialups are available too.

Soulflare - Where in NYC?

Legendary - I didn't think Optimum OnLine was available in most of NY City.

Soulflare, as for dial-up, it all depends on price as I've used numerous ISP's here in NYC and could not complain except for the price. As for broadband, if she doesn't care about premium cable go w/ RCN if available, it's more cost effective than Time Warner if your sister sticks to basic cable and needs broadband internet service [basic RCN cable service does not require converter box monthly rental fees] , hope this helps :)

I use Time Warner's cable. Its fast. We spend $40.

If she wants a dial-up. Yech. But try RCN, they're decent.

Cyberian - Err... the East Side?

We've been assured that it's a reasonably nice part of town.

Some of RCN bundles look pretty decent, too bad there's no pricing on their site. Thanks!

RR and Verizon are your only quality choices for broadband in the east side. i've had verizon dsl for a couple of years now, very good service. i know a bunch of people with RR and Verizon in nyc that are very happy with it. if you want RR for the faster speeds then buy it through earthlink since they resell time warners service for a couple of bucks cheaper.

OK, that's Manhatten. :)

You can try here, but it's not available everywhere in the city.

Optimum Online is NOT available in Manhattan. I've had OOL here since 12/99. Ranked best cable ISP in the nation baby! Parts of Brooklyn even have it now. But it's not an option for the "East Side" yet. Apparently they're working on it. Huge monopoly but they provide excellent service. They exist in CT and NJ too.

I believe Verizon DSL is though. Time Warner cable too perhaps.

Strange they don't isn't it? You see those OOL banners everywhere in Penn Station. Or at least used to. OOL service never existed in Manhattan up to this point.

*smacks Mday* :p

I checked out the pricing on a few of these DSL/Cable services and they are all like
double the cost of similar services in Toronto (where she's moving from), so it looks
like dial-up for sure. :(

Not strange you see banners... OOL is owned by Cablevision. Cablevision owns Madison Square Garden. Penn Station is BELOW MSG.. you do the math.

Also... i doubt OOL will ever be in Manhattan.... Manhattan is franchised to Time Warner.... for OOL to be in a TW franchise, TW would have to buy Cablevision, or Cablevision would have to buy TW.... not gonna happen unless the FCC changes their "virtual monopoly" rules... you can't have a virtual monopoly over a region... TW services NYC, parts of NYS... CV services LI, parts of NYS, parts of CT, parts of NJ.... if one buys the other... TW would have complete control over NY.... monopoly baby.

OOL definately rocks, I pretty much always get 8500/1000 on speed tests and close to it on real world things like porn downloading and gaming. I would move to an OOL area again if I had to move, damn the good schools, I want good speeds!
