Question for my mom

My mom usually gets online with MSN. For some reason, she'd been having problems and couldn't connect. I screwed around with it and still couldn't get it working. We even tried installing an AOL disk to see if it was just MSN. It wasn't. She can dial up and everything--it will even connect to get the dial up numbers--but when it gets to "talking to network" it fails. It said on AOL that the link to the network couldn't be established. I calld AOL tech support *laugh* and they couldn't help me. They said I needed a new disk. Whatever. Any ideas???

Re-install modem drivers? Not the built in ME ones, but updated ME version ones possibly?

How can she get those if she can't get online? Will it still dial it up or something?

Amish - I think so. I talked to the AOL person. It just stopped working all of a sudden.

gawd i haven't worked on a win9x Os for years but i'm thinkin its a network
issue..since it dials...it means the modem is ok...i would double check in ctrl-panl to be sure
u can connect and query the modem. read the returned msg and see if theres something
amiss.."error"...u can get new drivers, remove modem, and reboot so it'll redetect and point
to new drivers to reinstall.

then go into your network properties and remove all the extraneous crap left byt msn/aol.
make sure MS, tcpip stuff are correctly configured in the properties. then reinstall msn and try again.

a worthwhile test is also to use dialup-networking to configure a new connector to say a local
isp..not software controlled ones like aol. that can rule of if its their software acting up or your system.

and i assume theres no funky firewall, virus stuff messing things up

She can't get them unless she has the disk or if you download them and copy them onto a disk or something for her.

Oh, I assumed you were local or there already posting on a computer hooked up to the internet. :p Since most of us here have at least two computers and you said you were messing around with it. You can always just try a different number to connect to, sometimes thats the problem (although if it doesn't work w/ AOL either, probalby won't work).

Thanks, all. I'm going to print out this thread so when I go to her house I can help her. Or, I can just read it to her and have her do it. She hasn't been able to get online for a few weeks now. :(

Gr1mL0cK - I believe we've tried different numbers, especially with trying AOL also. I'm definitely not a computer genius, but I've tried what I do know and I can't figure it out. She would reformat, but she's got some pics and programs on her system that she doesn't want to lose. Neither one of us has a CD-RW.

Yeah, sorry couldn't help. Whenever I had that problem I just reinstalled the drivers and it always solved my problem. I'd hate to do a reformat over just a modem issue. Good luck.

u don't have to reformat.
just install over old c:\windows
most proggies will still work, and it won't delete her personal files.
save them to say c:\personal first.

Depending on the modem, the drivers might fit on a floppy.

From my repair tech days: Surge damage, not covered under warranty, changed to PSP or COD, new modem installed, sent back to customer, customer must restore software if problem persists

very few ever came back

With info like access phone #, user name, and pw, run the internet connection wizard.
That solves many problems with windoz connectivity for me and others...:)

I called my mom a little while ago and told her that I'd tell her what was in this thread. Hopefully she'll be able to get back online. Thanks, everyone, for all your help. :)
