What 17" LCD would you say is the best for gaming right now? Which one has the best grey to grey response time, I've seen you talk about this grey thing but dont really know what it is.

Also how long till a 19" LCD with a 16ms response time will come out you think?

Thanks!

Well there was an "LCD FAQ" thread which culled questions but never seemed to result in the actual production of a FAQ per se. If you pop in here Kris, let me know what you think about the 1901FP. I just ordered one and am having second thoughts based on some conflicting reports about ghosting.

LCD for gaming..it really depends on what type of gaming you do...
Even a good 25ms LCD can be acceptable for Fast FPS gaming.....(I mean games like RTCW:ET)

but it MUST be noted that even the best LCD out there when compared to a 85Hz refresh CRT........The person using the CRT has quite a big advantage........provided the video card is can draw the frames fast enough. a person using CRT will see almost certainly see more frames being drawn.....thus fast moving target tend become easier to track....(provided you have decent hand to eye corodination that is)...
If getting high scores in FPS gaming is important to you...use CRT.....
If you want to play WC3, I don't think it really matters and I would probabaly prefer a LCD...

The LCD FAQ is going to be a full blown article (look sometime next week). There will be a part II follow up including a in depth look at response times (including a lot of material from LG Philips and Samsung)

Most of the SuperIPS monitors have the better Grey to Grey response times (these are usually only produced by LG.Philips). The Grey to Grey response time is actually about a dozen measurements of the sub pixel twisting from one half shade to another (like a yellow to purple and back). This response time can be upwards of 100ms on some monitors, which quickly tosses out the notion of a 16ms black to white (and back) response time.

That being said, I still think the AUO 16ms monitor (Hitachi CML174, NEC 1760NX) is one of the better panels for gaming. Its really not a vibrant display, as it only produces 262,000 colors. (The Samsung 172T does around 16Million).

As for 16ms 19" LCDs, I think we might have something neat to look at for COMDEX or maybe even Computex Taipei. I have not heard or seen anything yet so it might not even be until next year, unfortunately.

Cheers,

Kristopher
