Hey kami, I was at Suncoast Video earlier today, bound & determined to pre-order LOTR, when I found out there is an Extended Director's Cut coming out Nov. 12th, VHS, 2-cassettes, with additional scenes, etc. I need to ask you your opinion on whether or not an extended version will be worth the wait. I'm kind of getting in on the tail end of pre-ordering, but I value your opinion regarding LOTR. I kind of wish I had DVD, but unfortunately I don't..:( Also, can you pre-order now for the Nov. 12th extended release? (Should've asked that at Suncoast.....

So, do you think it will be worth the wait?

Thanks!:) -kd5-

If you want my honest opinion, skip the regular VHS and contribute 25 bucks a month to a DVD fund then get yourself a DVD player in november for the extended release :)

BUT if you are intent on staying with VHS, it depends how much you like the movie. If it's one of your favorites, I think it's well worth owning the theatrical and extended cuts. Also it's about 3.5 months less to wait until you own LOTR ;) But if it's "just another movie" to you, then you may as well rent this one and wait for the extended cut. By all accounts the extended cut will be vastly superior (to me anyway). There is a preview of it on the DVD.

Well, it's definitely NOT just another movie to me. I've read the book several times, and LOVED the movie:) But you think owning BOTH versions is advantageous? Don't know if I could justify that with the GF

, probably one or the other.....

Will the extended version be radically different than the theatrical release??? -kd5-

Is the November Extended Cut DVD going to have the theatrical release on it, too ?

Or do you need to get the one coming out this week for theatrical cut

There is absolutely no reason to buy VHS other than you don't own a DVD Player which you should because DVD is the future.

The only reason you'd also buy VHS is if you're a rabit LOTR fan, only one person qualifies for such status.

kami please stand up, please stand up ... :D

RossMAN, I have so much tied up in VHS right now, I would be hard put to shell out the extra $$$ for a DVD player just for LOTR, even though I know it would be much much better..... -kd5-

In that case I hope you have a good VCR such as Panasonic, Sony or JVC.

The extended cut will be a lot different...30-35mins more footage is a *lot*...so if you absolutely HAVE to choose one, get that one.

But here is a little comparison I made up for you to try and convince you to go with DVD :D The resolutions are accurate and it's a true representation of the difference. The whie border indicates the border of a regular TV set :) link (top is DVD obviously)

edit: oh yeah, i know the vhs image looks really low-res but i shrunk down the source image to VHS resolution! it just looks exaggerated since it's on a computer monitor

edit2: fixed image. i funked up the first one hehe. i gave VHS way too much of a disadvantage by mistake ;)

If he were smart that's where he'd be.

RossMAN, I have a Sony SLV-N60:)

kami, the comparisons you just made, are they the difference between widescreen & standard video? I always knew widescreen was better, never really liked the bands of black nothing at top & bottom, but the amount of viewable is much better, it's more like how it actually looked at the theater. Thanks for the comparison:)

I think I may just wait for the extended version.....

Thanks, kami! -kd5-

Yeah that's the difference between widescreen and so called "fullscreen"...and it's exactly how it looked in the theater. The VHS version chops off about 45% of the original image (at least in any shots that contain special effects, some traditional shots may just be opened up at the top or bottom)...but the main point for me isn't whether it's widescreen or fullscreen, but whether it's the original aspect ratio that the director intended. In the case of LOTR, this is 2.35:1...fullscreen is only 1.33:1.

Make the move to DVD my friend! :D
