I have no problems with guns in the house, but I do think that having loaded weapons that are accessible to children is just plain stupid. You can teach your kids all the best gun safety in the world but it only takes one stupid friend of your kid to make a mistake or even a kid that is peer pressured into something. Every kid is peer pressured into doing stupid things, having a loaded unlocked gun around just increases the chances of something terrible going down.

For all the "I keep my guns locked and loaded in the pantry" people... If you had a depressed child/teenager or wild child, would that change your stance on the situation?

Scenario #1
They want to do something stupid, and use my weapon to do it when I'm not able to intervene. Result is, they're dead and I feel guilty.

Scenario #2
They want to do something stupid, so I secure my weapons, some type of feces hits the fan and I am caught without weapon. Result is, I, they, or we die, and someone feels bad.

Scenario #3
They want to do something stupid, so I secure my weapons, so they go pop a pill or any one of the eleventy-billion other stupid things. Result is, they're dead and I feel guilty.

*shrug* Guess I'll just do my best and accept what comes, no one can actually do more (in the end, it's out of your control).

I live alone, but when I have company over, one gun is usually on me, other has a trigger lock. And very few people know where my guns are otherwise.

I had a cable lock but when we lost power for 5 days I had a loaded clip ready with the cable removed. I am leaning towards a small gun vault. I am not paranoid and our area and neighborhood is as safe/bland as any midwest burb and our dog has a pretty mean growl and bark. I would have ample warning to be ready if there was an intruder.

I haven't considered any 'training' for my 5 or 3 YO but I'll introduce them to firearms eventually. Right now I am concerned about ninja-style rouge attacks since my kids love Kung-Fu Panda and tryout their moves on me.

For self defense purposes, I leave a few fully loaded mousetraps laying out at key points in the house. If I am feeling really defensive, I will put a mousetrap on the floor in the bathroom and turn off the nightlight.

I have been known to put a loaded mousetrap in my underwear drawer next to the condoms. No one goes unsupervised through my drawers unless they are trusty and predictable in their behavior.

Trustworthy man, take the time to get it right next time. This is your only warning!
