What kind of skills does one need to become a good DBA? Would someone with strong spatial skills be good for the job?

It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but among many other things, a DBA will (or should) use experience to help design a database structure that sensible, efficient and doesn't trade (much) performance to attain the first two goals.
