I just got a cell phone about a week ago and then decided to get another phone. How do you deactive your old phone and get your phone number & plan to be on the new phone? I have Sprint. Anyone have experience in this? Do they charge any fees?

Sometimes they'll charge a $35 fee, I don't know the stipulations though. To get your service changed to a new phone, go to any Sprint store and go to their customer service desk - ask them to put your service on the new phone and they'll take care of it for you. However, just a word of warning - there's almost always a long ass line - last week I waited 45 minutes to get my service changed for the 2nd time that week. The worst part was I really had to pee :|

You call them up and tell them that you want to change the ESN on you account, then you read the ESN (from the back of your phone, usually under the battery) to them, and they switch the phone that's used with your account.

Sprint might still be asses and charge you a fee. They used to charge me $30 every time I changed phones. Jerks. Verizon doesn't charge a cent.

Yep. I've never done it via calling them up although I will the next time I have to change the service over, but if you ever go into the store to have it changed, at every CS booth there's a sign stating a "$35 fee will be charged to switch phones" or something to that extent. I've changed phones about 10 times in 2 years and never been charged, so I don't know why they do it to some people.

From what I've read, if you're on a 2 year service contract there are no activiation fees.

I had them, they never charged me. when I had TDMA

they are GSM mostly I think and all you need to do is just swap out the card and pop it in another Gsm phone.

I just thought of something: Log on to your Sprint account via their web site. Look around. You might be able to switch your phone for free. Sprint is really into their web site and really, really, really into discouraging you from actually talking to a live person, so they may offer things for free on the web that they might otherwise charge you for.

That's Verizon, and they only charge a one time setup fee for the account, but never to switch your phone.

From what my friend said about AT&T they do not charge you to swap phones on TDMA networks. My friend switched his 3360 to a panasonic allure phone free. just called up the Customer service Number and gave them the info of his account and the phone.

I switched phones about four months ago. Did it online and didn't get charged anything. Quick and easy.

Where'd you go to do it online? I just checked and I don't see that option anywhere

No problem. Sprints customer service is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a CSR right away, sometimes you wait. I gotta call them up again and haggle with them on my new plan.

Damn, that sucks. Only time I was in a Sprint store was when I needed diagnostics ran on my phone.

Ahh, well a word of warning: Sprint stores CSR's suck. Thanks again for the tips too btw. I guess the only time I'll ever go back in is to upgrade my firmware

Thanks for the help :) Looks like I may have to call them up since it's based on a business plan.

So if I active a new phone, will the old one automatically be deactivated?

Yes it will, but your old phone will still be programmed with your old number, and if you leave it turned on, it will confuse the system, and may cause your newly activated phone to not ring on incoming calls. So be sure to turn off the old phone, or else ask them how to zero out your phone number from the old phone.

Will Sprint give you the rebates/special offers on the new phone (if you're switching to a new phone), or will they stick you with the full price? I'm thinking about getting a new one, but if they're going to charge me full price I'll just switch to a different company...

I switched a few months ago, if they charge you for activation, call them and complain, they will drop the charge.

As for rebates, check the rebate, I got one with an existing phone number, but some can only be used with a new phone number. Make sure you read before you buy.

Also, though it can be tough to get through, I have had sprint drop a bunch of charges by calling and complaining, not too bad customer service after you get through.

Edit: If you dont get charged the month that you change over then you should make sure you have enough money to cover 2 months of charges for the next month. It happened to me with 2 phone numbers, took a big chunk out of the finances. So just be wary if for one month you seem to be getting free service.
