Yes all of April is a holiday here in Canada. After hibernating
for most of the winter all Canadians must spend a few weeks shoveling
out their igloos and clearing the husky tracks. Not to worry, you
should be able to rent a room dans la capitale nationale(Quebec City)
as soon as the CBFI(Canadian FBI) lifts the ban on re-location in May.

Yes it's the FTAA. The governments of many of the American coutries (North, Central and South) are pushing through a free trade agreement (Free Trade Agreement of Americas).

It's controversial because none of the governments (including the U.S. and Canada) is letting the citizens hear the wording of the agreement until it's a done deal.

And the "Seattle" protesters are going to flock to Quebec City which is now being fortified by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (our "FBI") and will probably be under surveillance by the JTF2s (Joint Task Force 2s...think the Canadian Rainbow Six or Navy SEALs).

There will be checkpoints on roads similar to what is setup in Israel and Palestine and there have been laws passed to prevent people from wearing face garments (i.e. scarves, bandanas).

All in all I think this is going to be pretty hostile. I mentioned it way back in December of January but nobody really took notice here.

April 1 is the annual "Thin the herd Day" up here. It's an event that only takes place in Ottawa and it goes like this: It starts 12am Apr01 and ends 12am Apr02. During that time, beered(Canadian beer of course) up Canadian Forces roam the streets of Ottawa and shoot anyone they see onsite. It is a very popular event in Canada and often people travel from across the country to participate. Last year though, some American tourists tried to get their pictures taken with the Forces personnel. Needless to say, some went home in bodybags. Under pressure from the US State Dept, the Government of Canada has taken this security measure to insure the safety of tourists(Americans).

Thin the Herd Day is what makes us Canadians so tough! Look how we kicked Spain's @$$ in the Canadian/Spanish Cod War a couple years back! Running from Bulls is no match to running from Bullets! :D

BTW, Canada's "FBI" is called CSIS.

Actually Sandorski, our Canadian FBI is the RCMP (Royal Canadian
Mounted Police). CSIS is our equivalent of the CIA or NSA...
although I trouble saying that without laughing.

the reason they are not letting people rent rooms in Ottawa is because there are no hotels in Ottawa...

Yea, I suppose so. I'm all confused since CSIS took over certain tasks that the RCMP used to do.

the RCMP are some of the scariest SOB's on the planet, i think they're almost equivalent to the US's ATF (alcohohol Tobacco and Firearms), in the fact that they dress in all black, drive up in unmarked BLACK vehicles and are often times seen carrying a LOT of weapons, i was confronted by a group of "mounties" (although i'd never say that if they could hear me), and their demeanor alone says " i can and will kill you" , esp. since i'm an american, they seemed to hate me even more

Kaiser,

Does the Chateau Laurier come to mind when thinking of hotels in Ottawa? I had the chance to stay there over New Year's, and it is probably the nicest hotel I have stayed at. (aside from the Banff Springs Hotel, another CP hotel)

Canadian Pacific (now Fairmont resorts) hotels have to be some of the best hotels around!

In addition to what GL posted, this is a link to the FTAA Negotiating Groups that shows who is chairing what committee. It gives a pretty clear indication as to who is involved, the content of the FTAA deal and what is secretly being discussed and decided upon, on our behalf, without our input, by our elected officials. This meeting is taking place in the capital city of the Province of Quebec (Quebec City) and not in the nation's capital, which is Ottawa and located in the Province of Ontario.

This event is such a wild card. Anything could happen and probably will; which is why, "in Quebec, scarves and masks are prohibited during the Summit meeting, a four kilometre fence has been erected around the city, and a local prison has been emptied of 600 prisoners to welcome protestors."

Good times, eh?
:)

You can't rent a room in ottawa in April, coz they would've all melted!
all we got here in the arctic north of canada are igloos and dog sleds, and we don't need cpu coolers... heck, i live in an igloo! way better than a fop-100.... where do u think artic silver is produced??

anywyas, by april, all the ice hotels would've melted... and we're nearing our 24 hours of darkness cycle...

come back in about october...

littleprince,

Igloos are damn warm inside. I cool my Athlon out in the snow and put it in a special conducting package to reduce humidity. I bet I can overclock this beast to 2 GHz! :)
