Question for cable internet users...

I have cable internet (thru Charter). I currently have DirecTV sattelite.

At one time I thought I read that some people get basic cable even though they are not subscribed to any television service if they have cable broadband. Anybody have any experience with this?

I'd try it but I'm at work right now...

Most cases no. Probably depends. I know some people pay for basic cable because it's cheaper to have basic+internet instead of just internet.

There is always a way. So of course.

However, it is not legal - and thus, not very appropriate for this forum.

I'm not talking about a illegal cable box, or getting something you're not paying for. I'm asking if, when they hook you up to cable, you automatically have the basic channels...

no, they have switches that turn on/off TV and data service. the only way you could get both is a mistake by the installation tech.

No one knows unless someone here lives in your area and has tried. Odds are very much against you being able to plug in the coax cable and connect it for free basic cable.

Yeah...filters usually do the trick. Oddly enough, I have a couple of friends that pay for 13 channels and high speed internet and get all of the channels because the filters they used to use had so many problems...so they got the hookup. 😉

It works in NYC, Queens. I have Earthlink and get quasi-basic Time Warner Cable. You won't know until you try.

Timer Warner in Ohio, I just get the local access channel and QVC. Funny how they don't block QVC....

Oh, and I think I get the TV Guide channel thingy also.

My cable company in Indiana didn't make any effort to block TV channels if you only subscribed to cable Internet.

Best way to find out is plug the coax in your TV and check it out 😉 They usually have some sort of hardware filter they plug in at the cable box to block out cable channels (if you're not paying for it), but who knows if the cable install guy got lazy or ran out of filters...

We pay for basic cable (up to channel 20), but get extended cable b/c Cox's filters screw up our cable modem connection.
