I have a '99 Buick Regal GS... it's *almost* everything that I want in a car. :) It has a supercharger, so it's got some 'get-up-n-go', and it's got a luxury ride. My adopted mom has an '02 Buick Regal GS... I drove it for over a year (while I lived with her), and my experience with her car is what prompted me buying my car. ;) When I was looking for a used car, I looked for both Buick Regals and Pontiac Grand Prixs... and the Regals were generally less expensive, though I believe that they may have been more expensive when new.

There have been some problems with the late Regal line, but nothing significant. See http://www.regalgs.org if you're seriously interested in details about Regals.

My Mom has a '97 Century. It's a little too much float/body roll for my likes.
My Dad just got an '04 LeSabre, and I would definitely pick up one if I wanted a larger car. You could drive over an alley full of bodies and never feel them or hear the screams. His only complaint is that he used to be able to drive his old car ('92 Roadmaster) by road/wind feel, but now he has to use the cruise control. Awwwww...

EDIT: I had an '85 Skylark back in 1990, and the car has changed hands in my family twice since then. I believe a friend of my Cousin has it now; I know it was still on the road back in July when he sold it. That car just will not die.

My dad is on his 3rd Park Avenue.

Each one has lasted at least 200,000 miles.

Hasn't had any problems that I know of.

i am very surprised at this turnout for Buicks reliability...

I am not actually. They are rather simple cars with reliable engines and the main components shared between many GM brands. Proven designs so to speak.

Yeah, they don't really have any 'unique' parts, and they keep them the same mechanically for about 6-10 years. You could go to any parts store or junkyard in the country and get what you need. Worked for me when I wrapped my bumper around a deer in Upstate NY. There must've been ~50 cars like mine there, 10 with the exact same silver-on-blue color scheme.

EDIT: On the Buick vs. Chevy vs. Pontiac et al slant: Most people who buy Buicks are mature adults and buy them for comfort and cruising, not newly licensed / 20-30 yo guys racing ricers down the boulevard while spilling their Big Gulp into the console full of ciga-weeds or whatever. The Buicks are usually in far better interior, exterior, and mechanical shape because of that. I've also noticed a lot of Buick owners bring their cars in for regular maintanence more reliably than other owners as well.

That's because ATOT is full of fan-bois. Besides that the Buicks mostly got the parts from the 'higher-end' parts bin. No 4 bangers and such + they are a 'premium' GM brand so I guess htey actually try to make it better.

Topic Summary: NOT A JAPANESE CAR THREAD

One might have guessed the content of your summary based on the Title.

Just about to say the same. Another thing that also helped Buick is MOST of their cars came with the 3.8L. A very good motor. The smaller/lower end buicks came with 3.1's, not bad but not a 3.8, and a mix of 4 bangers.

I have been working on cars for 10+ years and when I needed a daily beater car I got a Buick LeSabre with the ole 3.8L.

My Mom-In-Law had one and got rid of it with 36k miles on it because she had so many problems with it. That and it's FWD.

My GF's former 95 Regal was a great car, just started to go down hill after 175k miles.
Transmission blew at 173, fixed that 180 the water pump went and at 196k the intake manifold started to leak.
Not bad for 11 years and nearly 200k miles.

Those are the 2 reasons I sold mine. If it had been RWD, it would have been incredible. Ove the last 12 months I drove it, it cost me an average of over $400 per month in maintenance.

Hehehe, that reminds me. My best friend's father has one (same year as my Mother-In-Law's was) and he had to have the engine replaced at 60k miles. He is a CPA and handles accounts for various car dealerships in SoCal so he was able to get the engine replaced under warranty but I doubt the average person would get the same treatment.
