Question for Apt. renters

basically the question is.

Do you feel comfortable letting strangers into your Apt when you are not around
wether it be to fix something,or do an inspection of any kind.

its not so much my stuff getting stolen.. its the little things that i would not notice gone, until some very odd time. You know that time when you need it just once, but you know you put it away and cannot find it.

the lady that takes the calls for the landlord or the company, she does not understand why this is a problem.

Or they by some chance clean me out.. i could not remember everything that was taken, or the time spent getting all it back.
 
My landlord is a really nice guy who always tells me when he's been in my place, even if it was just to open the door and drop off a package that he didn't want someone else to take. So no, I don't have a problem with him occasionally coming into my apartment.
 
Luckily I work out of home. I've been here at least twice during visits and only once that I can think of when I wasn't. Although last time they came (just last week) I happened to be here but never received a notice they were coming. Had I not been here they would have not been able to do what they were going to do (safety inspection).

Although, back when I lived in KC, MO they had someone come fix my floor without warning... it was freaky seeing the floor fixed and having no notice anyone was coming.
 
Its funny how many apartments will do background checks on their tenants but rarely do them on maintenance or office staff as most of them are either temporary or hourly. But since you don't own the building they have every right to enter given 24 hr notice or in emergency - just something you gotta live with if you are an apt dweller. If you don't like it then buy your own place 😛

emergency yes, i understand that fully, 24 hour as well.

in most cases it is not an emergency. id like to have someone there.. maybe they forget to lock the door?maybe more than one person is in there? having someone there reminds them that there there to do work.

id love to buy my own house.. but as of today, many of us are losing our jobs.. i will i might be very soon 🙁

I'm uncomfortable with it.

I told my landlord, because I had some maintenance issues, to let the guys know I have cameras setup that record any movement when I'm not there.
 
I actually enjoy it. Shit gets fixed, I'm not the one paying for it, and I don't even have to be home. So much better then problems I hear from home owners.
 
as long as I know about it in advance, I don't really mind.

it's in my lease that my landlord is not to enter the apartment without 24 hours notice unless it's an emergency. I like to just run around and make sure that nothing that might make a stranger... uncomfortable is left out in the open.
 
I'm fine enough with it, and have never had any problems. I'm too busy to stay at home when there is an issue. Our current landlord is the mom to one of my GF's best friends, so we personally know her a bit. If there is somebody fixing something, she is always there, even if we're not.

In my old apartment, the apartment's maintenance guy and a plumber had to come in and fix something. I left $300 in cash in plain view on my desk, and had completely forgotten about it until I had already left the apartment. They were working while I was gone. I was freaking out, but it wasn't even touched when I got back.

That's probably a better way to really make sure nothing gets stolen. They'll think it's a setup!
 
I wasn't comfortable as in "Sure whatever i'm totally find with it" but it didn't really make me uncomfortable.

In the last 6 years or so I've been renting at various places : they've always given me a reasonable advance notice (at one place I got a 2 month advanced noticed that they'd have some maintenance guy have to come in for some massive overhaul of the apartment complex). And in reality I'm right out of college so my stuff isn't that nice anyway.. and that's what insurance is for I guess.
 
i have renter's insurance. but im pretty sure they wouldnt cover everything. on top of. i couldnt begin to remember all the crap ive accumulated over the years that is there.

I know the maintenance guy and the managers of the building pretty well, so no, I'm not really worried. And if anything happened, well, I've got insurance.
 
I was a bit worried the first few times, but it's happened enough that it doesn't bother me anymore. I just got a call 15 minutes ago that they'd be showing my apartment tomorrow again.
 
Not really.
But I had a town house and not an apartment.
If someone needed to fix something while I was out, I always tried to get a trusted neighbor to let them in and watch them.

There was one dude who worked nights and hardly slept. He was one of those freaks who could get by on two hours a day.

There were at least 3 little old ladies who were more than happy to do it.

Where am I judging someone else's honesty? 😕

It's common sense to secure valuable items. That money belonged to a club that I was treasurer for and it was my responsibility to keep it safe. I didn't do that to the best of my ability. If I had taken 10 seconds to put it somewhere safe when I had left, the odds of something happening to it would have dramatically decreased. I was worried because I left the possibility open when I could have easily prevented it.

The whole point is to just give an example that it is ok to have "strangers" in your apartment. Take basic precautions, but don't be upset by it.
