Question for all you guitar guys.

From a resale value standpoint, I can tell you that the Gibson name will always bring more than the Epiphone name.

If I were considering either I would go to the store and play them.

None of my crappy music stores have them and plus I literally have to own a guitar and play it for weeks until I'm sure.

Hmm.. Looking at the two, the Epiphone LOOKS nicer. Nicer tuners, fancy block inlays on the fretboard. Plus I don't like the monotone color of the Gibson. I prefer the white "border" or whatever you call it on the Epiphone.

Play both of them and let your ears and brain decide. Never purchase sound related items via other peoples' opinions or reviews. Demo them yourself.

But the thing is, I can't demo which one is going to be all around more durable, nor will I be able to really get a good feel on which one is going to stay in tune longer unless one comes out of tune in like 20 minutes.

I own this one..it is a wonderful guitar. Nice price..better than most $1000+ gibsons i have played. Id pick that one over those 2 any day.

I'll second that. Gibson came out with an SL line of guitars- they're not very good. The Elitist is going to have good build quality, but Epiphone pickups are notoriously bad.

THIS comes with great LP quality, PLUS heavy Burstbucker pickups. Probably one of the best guitar deals out there.

the epiphone will play just as well, if not better. it depends on your tastes. The Gibson has better pickups. I'd go with the epihone because you can always put in some gibson 57's in their to replace the stock pickups. I have an epiphone les paul standard and it is the best guitar in it's price rang. I've been playing for 11 years and havent been able to affford expensiver guitars. it plays just as welll as my friends gibson les paul standard. It just doesn't sound as good at high volumes and get's a little muddy. Out of those two, it's just a matter of personal preference. Gibsons will age alot better.

I don't care about the finish or any of the cosmetics, I only care about tone, durability, staying in tune, and overall feel.

Thanks!

What skill level are you? I wouldnt blow the money on a gibson if youve been playing 3 weeks and wanna upgrade from your lyon or something.

If you're a beginner maybe check out Agile. Ive heard a lot of praise for the 2800 and above series.

in this case the gibson costs less than the epiphone.

LOL. I think if I were considering a gibson Id at least get a standard. Arent the specials made in the same factories as the epiphones anyways?

I've been playing for several years and right now I play on an Orange AD30HTC Head through a 4x12 cab.

Basically, pickups aren't a a problem for me right now, as I am likely going to swap them for Seymour Duncans.

Wow, now that's the kind of deal I've been looking for. A solid Gibson Les Paul with all the essentials and quality, without all the fancy cosmetics. I may even keep the pickups...but probably not 🙂.

I've played on a ton of guitars, and I've learned that you can't really tell if it's good until you own one for a long time...then the wear and tear starts to shine.

Depends on what you want. Two totally different guitars, the LP special if your "heavy handed" and like tone to the bone. Pick the Epi if you like smooth, fast and articulate.
Or get both and have a blast

And I like Fritzo's pick better than the LP Special for a tone machine

I'm a heavy handed tone guy. Big strings = big tone. Powerful strumming = big tone. Orange AD30 = big tone. More tone = more goodness.

Real Specials had P-90 pickups and were a "lite" version of the Studio. They were made popular by 50's surfer musicians that needed cheap instruments. Of course a vintage Special now goes for over $10K...

Burstbucker Pro's are top of the line pickups- don't go switching them!!!!

They are really great...for what they do. But they do not have quite enough output for my bubblegum happy punk-rock stuff I play. A Seymour Duncan Sh-5/Sh-6 would be much more suitable.

Dude if you are buying a Gibson, don't buy a Les Paul Specials. That's like getting a Porsche, but it's a boxster.

From your description of your playing style and tastes

THIS is what you really want. 496 ceramic in the front, 500 screamer in the back. I have one of these and with the right amp it is pure tone heaven🙂

And I agree with the others, don't mess up a good axe by swapping the pickups. Spend the extra bucks and get what you want to begin with, swapping the pickups puts a big hit on the resale/collectable value. If you want to play musical pickups, pick up a nice used (players piece) in a pawn shop. Buying a new guitar to swap the pickups is well, not a good idea.

😕 x 10

Burstbuckers are repros of the overwound humbuckers from the late 50's. They probably have about the highest output out there. That's why they're used in metal so much.
