looking for a cool trip to take with my girlfriend to downtown chicago next week and wanted to know where the good area is to stay, so we can walk to most venues or museums...wanted to be by michigan ave....that is what i am told by people from work.... i guess i am looking for a specific street to find a hotel on expedia...i can look it up on the map but since i have never been there i really don't know what is the best location to be staying in

I think I can answer most of your questions, but not without knowing how much money you're willing to plunk down.

The key museums to see are the field museum and the art institute, both of which are south (below the river). Museum of Science and Industry sucks butt.

It doesn't matter where you are, so long as you're not too far from Michigan Ave. You can even go well north of that for cheaper rates and take a bus (I think the 55 route for $2 each way). If you want any more info about where to stay/what to do/where to eat, PM me.

I've always enjoyed the Palmer House (owned by Hilton now). Rates are usually just a tad over $100. Link
 
There's an Embassy Suites at 600 North State Street, which is within walking distance of North Michigan Avenue (where all the shops are). Most of the hotels on Michigan (especially North Michigan) are expensive. But if money is no object, the Four Seasons at 900 North Michigan is quite nice.
 
And at 720 South Michigan there is a very large Hilton (the one that is in the movie The Fugitive). It's right across the street from The Art Institute of Chicago.

In the old days, it didn't get anymore upscale than the Palmer House. Boy, how things have changed.

EDIT: The Palmer House is located in the Loop (downtown), so I would not recommend it. But that's just my opinion.
 
There are a number of good hotels right on Michigan Ave. in the Magnificate Mile area that would be great places to stay. Chicago is a great place to visit. I live in the suburbs so I can go there whenever I feel like it, but never get there as much as I would like he he. I dont know the names off hand but you should look for something on Michigan Ave. in the mag. mile to stay since Michigan Ave. does stretch on for a ways. Also make sure you get to the Art Institute, its a great place.
 
you gotta call the hotels directly and ask if they have "weekend" specials, or "shoppers" specials. these can get you free breakfast, free parking (plan on $30.00/ day to park the car in a ramp, its worth it downtown). embassey suites is fine, omni suites is great. la meriden is great, four seasons great (but not worth the price).

you get the best deals by calling the hotel directly.

take you'r lady to lunch at Neiman Marcus -
try out the ferris wheel at navy pier
shaw's crab house for soft shell crabs when in season
lot's to do - you'll have a blast
