If you have Win98 or ME you should upgrade to WinXP.
But Win2000 to WinXP is a downgrade in my opinion, one I will not be making.
(Wonders how many threads he's posted this in....)
New UI seemed kinda cool at first. But the niftiness wore off.
Now I just get annoyed by little things in it.
And I like the layout of control panel in win2000 much better.
Not a big deal I can turn it off.
System Restore bugs me.
Not a big deal I can turn it off.
Auto Update bothers me.
Not a big deal I can turn it off.
Remote Assistance scares me...they basically install a trojan server and enable it by default on every winXP box. Ack!
Not a big deal I can turn it off.
Activation annoys me...it's only 2 or 3 mouse clicks, and in my experience it's very leniant about changes...but still...I don't
like the concept...and what happens in 3 years if MS decided, nah you can't run XP anymore, no more activation for it.
It does have one cool thing going for it...I can play all my old DOS games with sound (this is obviously only an Advantage
over win2000, but that's all I'm comparing it to). But...then I did. Those games were cool in their day, but I just can't see
myself playing Warcraft 1 over War2 or Starcraft, or Duke3D over Half Life. Yes the classics are great..but I don't think I'll
play them much.
Add in the fact that my War FTP server won't work in XP, nor Will Norton AV 2000, Partion Magic Pro 6.01 or Easy CD
Creator 4.0d (I don't actually use Easy CD but a lot of people do)...I'm sure this will be fixed in the Gold version, or there will be
patches available...but either way, it's something to consider.
Finally throw in a performance hit over win2000...and you are not left with a whole lot of compelling reasons to take winXP
over win2000.
If you are coming from win98/ME to winXP, it's a good jump...but from win2000 IMO they took a very good OS and
screwed it up a bunch.
I've tried out XP...and it's not a terrible OS, it's pretty decent, especially when you consider what's been coming out of MS
for the consumer space previous to it. But compared to win2000 IMO, XP offers scarce little. There are some games that
work better in XP than 2000...but personally I have run into none of them, and I expect future games will support both
equally.
Hahahah rain, I like that

Spend the money on beer

A better use of it if you are coming from Win2000 that's for sure.
