Are the people using W2K planning to "upgrade" to Win XP ? At first I was planning to but now that I think about I have never had W2K crash since I first insatlled it over 5 months ago, the gaming support is getting better, and from what I understand Win XP will be a little bit slower than W2k.

Hello,

I just moved to W2K from Win98SE, about two weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. I'm basically a gamer and was very worried about all the "gaming bugs" in W2K. Much to my surprise, there aren't any that affect me. All my games run. I've read that most of the EA Sports games don't run/run buggy, but I don't play sports games so I'm ok.

I've had a few "stuttering lockups" while playing UT online, but that may have been a network problem. I rebooted and it was fine.

I don't know much about XP so I can't really speak to that topic, but I'll be sticking with 2K for the forseeable future.

I'm also wondering weither or not I'll be going upto XP from Win98SE. I want to hear what some of the beat testers think.

I will go to WinXP from Win2K only if MS mails me a free copy. I don't plan on spending money on it though.

I see no reason for any computer of mine to move to XP from W2K. I need to see something a little more substantial.

I'll probably move up to XP, all the beta users are going nuts about it, I haven't heard of much problems and I get it for free (from my school).

It also gives me a good reason to format!

But I don't want to wait till October 25th though. So either I get it through some other way once it hits gold or I hope CMU gets some early copies.

Im not going to bother with it. I have no issues with XP except that I personally can not stand the toolbar in IE 6. Going from Win2K to XP offers nothing of interest to me. I rather save the 90$ upgrade cost and buy more beer.

I run XP 2535 on my laptop and I think it's faster than Win 2K which I run on my main machine. I would not bother to upgrade from Win 2K Pro because XP has nothing to offer that I don't already have. The interface doesn't impress me and neither does the integration. I run IE6 under Win 2k ( and I like it )as well as Office XP. As soon as my 60 days are up on my laptop I will re-format and install Win 2k again. Unless someone can convince me that there is a solid reason for Win XP I will stick with Win 2k Pro.

Most likely not, since I just set up a new system with Win2k, and that was a PITA. Too much trouble for few (or no) benefits, and many questionable features. I've been using 2k on another machine for over a year, with only one game that won't run. Everything else works with a few tweaks.

I'll stick with 2000 for now. It has been rock solid for me. If I end up with a corporate copy from work I might load it on my "test" system though.:D

I would never switch from Windows 2000 to XP. 2000 is the best OS M$ has released to this date. 2 words to summarize OS "ROCK STABLE"

the only reason i upgraded from win98se to win2k is b/c win98 sucked. win2k does not suck and is doing everything i want. until i hear about overwhelming satisfaction with XP over 2k i won't upgrade.

If you have Win98 or ME you should upgrade to WinXP.

But Win2000 to WinXP is a downgrade in my opinion, one I will not be making.

(Wonders how many threads he's posted this in....)

New UI seemed kinda cool at first. But the niftiness wore off.
Now I just get annoyed by little things in it.
And I like the layout of control panel in win2000 much better.

Not a big deal I can turn it off.

System Restore bugs me.

Not a big deal I can turn it off.

Auto Update bothers me.

Not a big deal I can turn it off.

Remote Assistance scares me...they basically install a trojan server and enable it by default on every winXP box. Ack!

Not a big deal I can turn it off.

Activation annoys me...it's only 2 or 3 mouse clicks, and in my experience it's very leniant about changes...but still...I don't
like the concept...and what happens in 3 years if MS decided, nah you can't run XP anymore, no more activation for it.

It does have one cool thing going for it...I can play all my old DOS games with sound (this is obviously only an Advantage
over win2000, but that's all I'm comparing it to). But...then I did. Those games were cool in their day, but I just can't see
myself playing Warcraft 1 over War2 or Starcraft, or Duke3D over Half Life. Yes the classics are great..but I don't think I'll
play them much.

Add in the fact that my War FTP server won't work in XP, nor Will Norton AV 2000, Partion Magic Pro 6.01 or Easy CD
Creator 4.0d (I don't actually use Easy CD but a lot of people do)...I'm sure this will be fixed in the Gold version, or there will be
patches available...but either way, it's something to consider.

Finally throw in a performance hit over win2000...and you are not left with a whole lot of compelling reasons to take winXP
over win2000.

If you are coming from win98/ME to winXP, it's a good jump...but from win2000 IMO they took a very good OS and
screwed it up a bunch.

I've tried out XP...and it's not a terrible OS, it's pretty decent, especially when you consider what's been coming out of MS
for the consumer space previous to it. But compared to win2000 IMO, XP offers scarce little. There are some games that
work better in XP than 2000...but personally I have run into none of them, and I expect future games will support both
equally.
Hahahah rain, I like that :) Spend the money on beer :) A better use of it if you are coming from Win2000 that's for sure.

there are a few nice/useful additions winXP has made to W2k. Hopefully, maybe we will see them implemented to some extent in future w2k service packs

Some small additions/"fixes" to 2K, maybe... but not too likely if MS' bottom-line is sales of the XP platform. 2K was entirely pitched at businesses, or "professionals," I believe, bypassing the "Average Joe," and power-home-user/hard-core gamer segments. MS is not likely to think a few added slight tweaks here, and there, will be seen as a necessity by its users who are likely doing just fine in getting things done as the OS is right now.

IMHO, if I need any "tweak" bad enough, I'll nab it off of a friend's copy of XP, or the net, in the near future. msconfig, and XP's Compatability "thingy" ;) from the XP betas seems to work fine in my 2K w/SP2. I find 2K works just fine for me. Do I feel XP's price-tag justifies the need for one, or two small tweaks? Na! :D

Will I upgrade to 2K? I'm more than happy after having migrated to 2K Pro from 98SE a few months ago. I might upgrade to XP when my box no longer is adequate, or fulfills my needs (which I believe should be the only reason to "upgrade" completely to a new OS). Then again, I might be just as likely to "upgrade" to some flavor of the ever-evolving, and improving Linux, as I would to XP....

Just MHO. :)

i would seriously suggest staying on win2k, XP is just a fancy GUI that eats away at your system, not to mention Microsoft throws their face into everything

Whereever did you hear that?? Read Anand's XP trasition articles.

RC1 is like a 25% performance hit over Win2000.
RC2 and Gold will probably be a bit better...but 25% is a big deficit to make up with tweaking...unfortunately all the "featres" XP adds over 2000 just suck resources.
