I'd see if he has a good "heatware" rating; it's a system similar to feedback on ebay, but it's not tied to any particular site.

You can also see if he'd be willing to ship to you first, and then you could send your card to him. Of course, this begs the question of how he can trust *you*. :p

The most secure option would be to use an escrow service, although I'm not sure how well that would work for a "trade" -- they usually handle purchases (you send them the cash, then they inform the seller and he ships the item, and then once you get the item, you tell the escrow service and then they give the seller the cash).

Check his heat. Be prepared to ship first if he has good heat. Ignore fleabay feedback ratings unless they have over 100 is my standard, all positive. Exchange phone numbers, make certain they have a real e-mail, no hotmail or yahoo, and that you can contact them that way by exchanging a verification e-mail. Package must be nuke-proof so bubble wrap or peanuts and good boxing and taping are a must. If he doesn't have much heat then you should cross-ship and have verification by tracking#, no DC# from priority as those get faked too easy and don't have real-time results. It's always a risk wih unestablished traders though so I usually only send something before payment or recieving the merchandise to those with 20+ positive heat and no negative or neutral.

well, we switched to email correspondence, and i just received this:

I have 1 feedback on heat which I just started using, and about 60 on eBay
under xxxxxxx which is my wife. My problem is how I would swap it. I use
the GT on my computer at work so I can't have it down. Is there an escrow
service we could use or something to that effect. You can call me at work
if you like. My name is xxx. My phone number at work is 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx.

sounds legit....

Call him@work and make certain he isn't the proprietor or in another capacity where there isn't an employer you can contact should you be trolled. My problem with his response is that he has no feedback of his own of any substance and you'd need to verify it's indeed his wife's references too. Then he is already implying you would need to ship first and that is always a bad sign when other noobs don't want to cross-ship. Be careful brudda, this is fishy so far.

EDIT: I'd also find out why he needs a GT@work and what happened to the card it replaced. Personally, at this point I wouldn't even cross-ship with him, it has ear marks of a set-up that need to be cleared up before I'd place 1 iota of faith in his ability to carry out his end of the bargain. Also, why can't/won't he provide a home#? That's nonsense, a good trader will give you his home# in a second to help reassure you.

sounds very complicated and slightly fishy, personally I would pass on the deal, especially if he is making overtures for you to ship first.

starting out trading is tough enough as it is, to start out with a $400 vid card swap is very risky.

you should both send to me or someone else here who is trustworthy. I'd be willing to serve as mediator. PM me.

That's an excellent idea  That way they just pay a bit more for shipping but get the insurance that their cards come back should the deal go sour on the other end.

I agree, I would not cross ship with only 1 heatware reference.

that would be insane, then you could bench both and gives a real, hopefully, unbiased review.

That isnt exactly a 10 second project. Its not fair to either trader to recieve their cards a few days later. I mean i wouldnt mind, but many ppl would.

He could also just bench with the X800 first, send it and then bench with the GT when he got it... not sure why he has to have both in his possession at the same time to do this. Anyway it doesn't matter since he has two X800s apparently.

I think in the end, you are better off sticking with well established traders on big ticket items like this.

i have a visiontek x800, and a bba x800xt still on preorder, lol.. that's why i'm willing to trade one.. was gonna sell one and get a gt anyways, but if i could do this cleanly, it'd be much less hassle.. still, the risk is much greater :(

I don't know if I would do this Cainam. You can sell a X800Pro for $400 and buy a new Gt off eVGAs website for the same or change out of pocket.

Why go through the stress?

Did you find out why he needed this strong of a card at work? And you could see if you can send a cheap card so he has something to use in the meantime, then have him send the GT and you send the Pro when you get it. He could then send the first card back and you reimburse him for shipping.

Bit of a hassle, but safer for you. But as you've noted, he's still taking a gamble.

There's no reason to go through these shenanigans. You have a card worth $400, eVGA and BFG sell GTs for $400 on their sites.

Sell your card on FS/T, don't ship till you have payment in hand, make your Heat 2 refs instead of 1. Anyone who asks you to ship first, tell them "no" or that you will if they use an escrow service and pay the fee. I'd trust you, Heat or not, having read your posts.

i haven't responded as i was busy this weekend, and had to drive over to the coast as well... he did send a subsequent email stating he might be able to toss a 5200 in his work pc tho. gonna follow up with him here in a bit.
