This is pretty sad. Bicycles belong on the road and must obey all traffic laws. They do not belong on sidewalks. Bicycles have the same rights on the road as cars do and riders can be ticketed for not obeying traffic laws. This information is on most tests to get a DL. For those of you who say you've never heard of this, you need to retake the driver's test.
Yep. I've been riding for 15 years and have been hit exactly twice. Both times were because the driver wasn't paying attention and made a left turn (oncoming) right into me.Originally posted by: NuclearNed
Here's what I do when I'm on my bike:
1. avoid dangerous roads
2. ride aggressively
3. know and obey the rules and laws of the road
4. stay alert
5. assume that each driver behind me cannot see me
6. wear the appropriate gear and clothing
Those six rules have never failed me yet.

How the heck do you guys ride on smaller roads? Aren't you afraid? The other day I was passing a cyclist on a back road and there was oncoming traffic. As the result, I couldn't steer into the opposite lane and when I passed the guy there was litterally 10 inches of space separating us. I was scared sh*tless that I'll knock the guy off. Yet he just continue riding.
I can see how somebody in a big SUV or an inexperienced driver could've easily hit the guy. Can't you guys go to a park and ride there?

At the very least I think you should be riding in the opposite lane, that way you're facing traffic. Those bikes don't even have rear-view mirrors.
The second time I got hit, the guy's car was totalled while we were waiting for the ambulance. Some kid came around the corner and was (I guess) looking at us and slammed into the back of the guy's Jetta. :laugh:Originally posted by: DrPizza

The best part of such accidents is knowing that generally the driver is at fault and they're also going to end up with a big scratch down their paint.
Thanks for reminding me though; gotta find the bike shorts in storage. I hate riding longer distances wearing regular shorts.

The kid's parents heard the wreck and came running down the road. The cop shows up, sees a smashed bike, two smashed cars, the kid's parents are bitching him out, and is like "WTF just happened and who gets the ticket?"Originally posted by: JulesMaximus

Mooning them is always an option in such cases.Originally posted by: JulesMaximus
When I ride on the roads, which is pretty much whenever I ride, I ride aggressively, I always wear a helmet and appropriate clothing and I obey the same laws as cars do. It helps that we have marked bike lanes on most roads in SoCal. Not that that stops motorists from ignoring them or driving in them. I like to stop in the bike lane at a light and get some asshat behind me honking at me to get out of his way so he can turn right. I just ignore idiots like that.

Also, we don't care. We're kinda jerks like that![]()
Hmm, no it's not. If there is a car coming in the opposite direction, I'm not risking a head on collision just to save you a few broken bones.
Slow down and pass the guy on the bike when its safe? Not that hard.

I was thinking of flipping him off but I din't want to do something to provoke the moron being that I'm on a bicycle and he's in a car. I just looked back, gave him a dirty look and then ignored him.![]()

I have pretty normal-sized calves, but they're more cut than yours.
