Which OS would be better for a sever (dual processors system) and y?

Win 2K Pro
Win 2K advanced Server
Win XP pro

What kind of server .. server is a pretty generic term .. with no idea of what kind of server you need, out of those, the choice is Adv Server. simply because it can be a DNS/DHCP/IIS5 Web (i know)/Cert Auth/RRAS/NAT um well you get the idea .. and Win2k pro doesnt have any of that built in really, some but not all .. so give more of an idea of what you need .. all of them support dual cpu ..

If you are just going to do file/print sharing and have less than 10 computers accessing it, W2K Pro or XP Pro is your best bet as it is much cheaper.

If you need more than 10 users to connect to it and/or need other things like DHCP/DNS/IIS/Domain/Active Directory, etc., then W2K Server (regular server, not Advanced) is what you want.

Unless you plan on putting more than 4GB of RAM in it or more than 4 processors or doing clustering, Advanced Server will give you absolutely nothing.

Sunner's question is perhaps the most important one and we don't have an answer to it yet. What's the best Microsoft OS for you? Well, you tell us what you need. Bozo1 is pretty much right on though. More than likely Server will fit your needs fully. AS does have cool stuff like clustering that I would like to play with, but thats really about it.

If you're planning on running FTP and SETI, go Linux.

It will save you a crapola of money on the software itself, and you wont have to deal with the security issues of IIS.

8 processors? is there even a MB with that moany sockets?

Can someone give me a link to some good litature on linux, also will my programs work on it??

Not off the shelf at CompUSA, but servers from Compaq, HP, Sun, etc have several models with 8 and more processors. Where I work we have 2 AlphaServer GS160s with 16 processors each.

Linuxnewbie.org is also a good place to look. As for "your programs", if you mean Windows programs then no. You have to run programs compiled to run on Linux, but it's usually not hard to find an equivilent program, and on the server end they're usually better than the Windows counterparts.

🙁 see linux would not be a good solution for me then because I want to leave this up 24/7 and since i play alot of gmaes i would be restarting all the time

and they would cut my ftp off

Josh

You need another system to dedicate for FTP's... A low end pentium would work just fine. .. having a PC that does other stuff also be your FTP server is a really bad idea.. but if you want to... so you can trade warez or whatever, just run that Personal Web peice of crap from Microsoft.

ok thx i will probally just stick to windows xp, but i will probally not do an ftp its just seem lik something logical to do with the server
