Question? Do you mind eating food that has directly rested on the table at a restaurant?

If it is something dry like a roll as you suggested, then OK it's going down. But if it is something wet and saucy like a chicken wing, then no I will not eat it.

For instance, you have an item like a roll or a piece of bread that sits on the table next to your plate.

What sort of restaurant does this? I'm used to them being on their own plate or in a basket.

This would not bother me at all at home. If I was with some company I was trying to impress at a restaurant, I might feel differently, but bread is pretty basic. It would not bother me at all. After all, I put knife and fork on the table and still put those in my mouth so I don't really see much difference between that and eating a piece of bread that is directly on the table.

I've seen what a few restaurants (OTHER THAN WAFFLEHOUSE) use to clean their tables, no I would absolutely not eat anything on the table. I would however encourage anyone and everyone else to do so.

Now that I have the Pink Eye, I make sure I go around a touch every piece of bread before eating my own...

If the food in question has been sitting on the restaurant table for seven years then I would not choose to eat it.

nothing that good...boss dropped his sandwich in the truck..he said it wasn't salvageable..i proved him wrong.
It was probably genoa or cotto then, in which case it was probably improved (if anything) by spending time on the floor.

i have no idea..it was resting on top of some hard cheese slices. it was quite a nice looking sandwich..i can understand my bosses pain when he dropped it.

Depends on the restaurant. When I worked in Diners and casual restaurants in my youth, the rag that your table is wiped off with is nothing but gross. It's just a damp rag that probably picks up a bunch of nasty stuff then deposits it back on the next table that is wiped with it.

When I worked in nicer restaurants with tablecloths, that just felt cleaner.

I forgot to even reply to op. Yeah its pretty gross. I like my silverware resting on napkins and no food touching the table. It's pretty common sense.
