Usually when you have your cable modem installed, they use the ethernet port for the cable modem. USB does work with the cable modem, but does have more problems than a ethernet port would cause. The cable modem I have has both ethernet and USB, so you will prob. get a cable modem like that or just ethernet.

Road Runner brought over a NIC and a Toshiba cable modem that supports Ethernet or USB. When he asked me if I just wanted him to try USB, I told him I'd rather have the NIC installed, so he didn't even bother with USB. The dude was super cool, so he even spliced a connection in for my TV and gave me a splitter, since my cable co. can't separate the data signal from the basic cable TV signal where I'm located, so I get free basic cable.

I have a motorola cable modem leased rrom my ISP. It supports both ethernet and USB. When they installed it, they used the USB connection, but all I had was problems, the worst of which was that it doesn't work in Linux that way. First thing I did was head down to FS/FT and get a 10baseT card and a patch cable, now it works like a dream. :)

Long story short, ETHERNET OR NOTHING :D

Exactly. The guy that installed mine saw the custom built computer while he had the USB cable in his hand, then wisely put it back and got out the ethernet cable. I was afraid I was going to have to tackle him if he got any closer to my computer w/ that USB cable.

Well I don't think much of USB in general so I would get it. My Motorola has never even heard of USB.:)
