Question: crunching keys with klinux??

TGEN

Junior Member
When I scan the posts here, I sometimes note a signature of someone, which says something like "RC5 on a bootflop, klinux". Is this true, and is it possible to have both a linux version and the d.net client on the same bootflop?

I have numerous pc's without harddisks, and this bootflop-client could really help me bringing life to old computers. Then they'll be of some use, instead of rotting on the attic.

I hope you won't value this post less because I'm a DPC-member, will you?

No, it's not true. It's a hoax, it doesn't work, and it puts a virus on your computer.😉

possibly we could value it more!!
you guys are doin a hell of a job!!

yes it is true
http://klinux.50megs.com/ for info and DL
Kilowatt has done an outstanding job with this

"(Note: for 686 type processors with 32MB ram)"
but it is best to read his page(above link)

I have it running on one machine with just a floppy drive, video,NIC,and keyboard
(I think it will run without the video, but have not tried it)

it is 'very simple' to get going

best of luck, you guys keep crackin and we will race you to the top!!
in about 2 months we will pass /. and it will be interesting to see
when(if) DPC does

Oh, all right! Yes, it works like a champ. I'm using it on several of my crack rack nodes.😀

Russ, NCNE

Dale,

Nope. All of my nodes have cards. I would think it will work just fine as long as you could remember the command for unzipping the tar ball and starting the dnet client.🙂 You would have to set the BIOS up to "halt on no errors" with some motherboards, though.

lol Russ,

<< No, it's not true. It's a hoax, it doesn't work, and it puts a virus on your computer >>

It does now! Pass it out to ALL the DPC. lol

You'll need some kind of a video card. ISA with 512k memory will work.
Not knowing your network configuraton, or your pproxy IP, it's a generic version, so you'll need to do some things first.
Everything should be in the README.TXT.

Thanks for the pat on the back guys. 😀

Kilowatt - you deserve it man, that thing is slick!!!!
thanks to you for making it.

I have tried both versions(different NICs) and it is great
I guess I should have tried, but is it possible to mount a floppy
for sneaker-net (people with no local network) ??

..Dale

Dale,
You could try it, all the apps that are avalible are in /bin.

So as not to disturbe your running Dnet client, Ctrl-Alt-F2 to another tty terminal. (supports up to 8 I think)
You'll have to log-in to that also as root.
To leave that tty terminal, just do a Ctrl-D, and then Ctrl-Alt-F1 back to the original tty terminal.

BTW, this function is handy for flushing the Dnet Client with ./dnetc -flush.

cd to /bin and type ls.
There, everything supported is listed. (I think 🙂)
I might have had to leave a few things out, to make room in the floppy image.

well, thanks alot for your replies 🙂

I'm really happy with the fact that it is possible 🙂

The systems are all powered by old celeron processors, and are without harddisks and have a 2meg pci virtual graphics array card 🙂. They also sport 32 megs of pc-66 sdram.

Again, thank you!

Did I mention that anyone using Klinux outside of Team Anandtech, needs to donate a weeks worth of blocks on all machines running said Klinux, to a Team Anandtech mini team of your choice? 😀

/me wonders if I should add smiley or not?

If I switch a cow from Win32 to klinux will I see a change in performance for the dnet RC5 client? I would think I would see no change or perhaps a slight increase in performance.

I suppose any blocks donated to the Borg, would make me "00 of Borg" 😉

<edit> RC, I have a CII 566 @ 850, that gets 2.31Mkeys/s in Win98, and 2.40Mkeys/s under Klinux. </edit>

RC,

Linux is, indeed, faster than Win 32. For example, an Athlon 700Mhz will do about 50K to 55K more Keys/s in Linux.

Russ/Kilowatt: Yes, as I thought, perhaps 1 to 2 percent improvement. This seems reasonable.

I think I've found the mobo/processor that I will be using in my new crackrack, but not ready to say with certainty. The most important thing is to buy all the components at once. This way I only have to listen to wife complain one time. 🙂 (If I'm lucky)

Russ, any point in contacting your compucheap.com business? I've spent maybe 30 seconds glancing your site, I don't know if I can save any dinero going through your business or not. Perhaps, better to discuss this with you via email.
