Question concerning the Opteron 165

I have a simple question... Maybe 2 questions...

1) How does one find the stepping on his/her processor?

2) I just recently bought an Opteron 165 and it runs at 40c idle using the 4 pipe HSF included in the retail package.

Some information:

I first installed it and looked in the bios and noticed that my processor was running at 43c on idle (strange I thought). So, I took out the HSF, took some Isopropyl and rubbed the old thermal compound from both the processor and the heatsink. I then applied my own thermal compound thinking that could've been the problem. Unfortunately, I saw no change. I even thought I may have had the heat sink on the reverse direction. So, I switched it so the lock was facing the PSU and no difference at all. I think I just may have a bad processor. I was thinking of removing the IHS, but my processor is still under warranty, so that's out of the question.

What do you guys think?

1) look at the IHS, it'll be listed there. I'm not sure if you can find it through software or not.
2) 43C (even 40C) does seem rather high for an idle temperature, my Opty 170 idled at around 32-35C at stock IIRC (though it has been quite a while since I've run it at stock ;)). Do you have decent airflow in your case? Heatsink making good contact? What's the ambient temperature? If it's none of those things, I guess it is possible that your IHS doesn't quite make good contact with the core...

1) Alrighty

2) I have 5 fans circulating air in the case. The case is about 32c - 35c. I'm assuming the IHS isn't making good contact to the core as you said.

yeah, that is strange. mine is OCed to 2.5 GHz and it still idles around 29-30C and its LOAD temp is 40C.

more fan's isn't always better, however your temps seem nice inside the case.

True, but the case came with 5 fan holes. So, I didn't want the computer to look awkward with a missing fan.

Anyway, I've decided to RMA the processor. However, I threw out the box and the plastic casing that the processor is supposed to go in (whoops!). So, now I'm trying to figure out how to package it. Does anyone have any ideas?
