Question: can I use a 66mhz bus cpu in a mobo made for 100 mhz?

I got a proprietary mobo for a hp that had a p3 850/100 in it. considering a trade now for a 733/66 celeron but am unsure if it will work. im pretty sure the celeron will work, just not sure about whether the bus speed will matter.

thanks for any advice!

The cleleron 733/66 will not run on your HP board with the 100mhz fsb, because the multiplier on the cpu is stuck at 11x. This means that at 100 mhz fsb, the celeron would be running at 1100mhz. Very few people can get their celeron 66's to run at that speed, and only with radical cooling. Sorry for the news. I suspect that otherwise, the board would accept the chip, unless it was made well after the release of coppermine, in which case, there is a small possibility it will not accept pre coppermine chips. Doesn't really matter because the celeron probably wont run at 1100mhz.

It also depends whether his board will support a 66MHz FSB. There are a some (albeit VERY few) boards that allow 100MHz FSB, but not 66MHz FSB.

thanks for the replies!

I just checked it out on HP's website and all I could find was that the board is a 810e chipset. intels website says the 810e supports 66 mhz celerons so I guess it will work. I think it may be an MSI board, but cant confirm that. did see what looked like jumper settings near the ide ports and it shows diff settings including 66, so im thinking it may work. hell, might just take a chance.
