Well... I think my hard drive (IBM DeskStar 60GXP) has finally crapped out on me... even if it hasn't, I'm taking my cues that I should probably start looking for a larger one.

So I'm looking for, right now, a 7200 RPM hd, possibly one 20gb and one 80 gb (one for the OS/proggies, one for mp3's). I'm curious as to what y'all have to say about Maxtor's, Seagates, and Western Digital hard drives...

How loud they are (my 60GXP was freakin' LOUD), overall speed and access time, reliability, etc.

Thanks.

I Love my two maxtor drives. a 40gb and a 60gb liquid bearing drive. I can't hear either.

If you want a silent and I do mean silent drive pick up a Seagate Barracuda (they are silent btw and comparitivley cool). If you want good performance, low noise (IBMs are notorious especially the 60 and 75GXPs for noise) pick up a Western Digital or Maxtor. I personally can vouch for the Seagate Barracudas, WD 800BBs and 120JBs, all rock, are very quiet, RAID well :). I have found the Cudas are more reliable, but the WD provide greater performance. Good luck...

Thank you, RazeOrc... I am almost dead set on getting a Seagate BIV 20gig and a BIV 80gig... prices are good at Newegg. The extra performance I would gain with WD is secondary to the reliability of the drives... so for now, I'm going with this.

Maybe, in time, I'll get a parity setup going.... but not now. :D

Any last thoughts?
