Okay, I'm selling something on eBay and I have the a reserve price (ya know, if the bidding doesn't meet/exceed my stated price no one "wins" the auction). The reserve price isn't displayed, but I keep getting a guy e-mailing and asking what the reserve price is. Should I tell him? So far I've givin him vague answers like, "It's a resonable price.."

Just ignore him. Tell him to bid what he wants

Well, in the bidder's defense, it's also marginally annoying to bid, have it be too low... bid again, too low, etc. Telling him the reserve price won't cost you a dime.

It's reasonable for you to say you'd like to keep the reserve price private.

I understand him wanting to know the reserve price, but it's also a secret for a reason.

Thanx for the all the input. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't violateing any auction edicate<sp?>.

IMHO, there are rarely good enough justifications for a reserve price, let alone a private one. For the most part, folks will bid as high as they'll go (or higher). If you're trying to force a bidding war, that's one thing I suppose. Other than that... who knows.

Why not tell him? The reserve price is the minumum you will sell it for. Anything less you re-post it, anything more and it's in the mail to the person. He wants to know the minimum you'll let it go for. If you tell him 1 of 2 things will happen: he'll bid on it or he won't. If he bids on it, then it's safe to say he'll bid what you want for it. Everyone wins.

Don't use a reserve price. You turn away a lot of potential bidders. I will personally click the back button shaking my head in disgust as soon as I see it in an auction.

I use a reserve price & usually list it in the description, that way I don't have to set the minimum bid too high, encourages bidding & attention & puts all those folks with bidding engines on level ground...

If you're selling something worth $300 but due to lack of interest at the time your top bid is only $100 you sure as heck want a reserve price on it.
