Question: are radio stations required to keep a transcript of everything they broadcast?

A follow-up to my earlier thread.

We're trying to procure a transcript of this morning's show and the station is saying "There isn't one." Seems to me that any station needs to keep records of what they broadcast in the event they are accused of some kind of FCC infraction. Anyone got some info for me? A quick search of FCC.gov was less than enlightening.

While I don't know about a transcript, you'd think they would have a have a recording of the whole thing. I don't know how easy it will be to get a copy.

You might want to PM Chaotic42, he used to work for a radio station.

Thanks. 🙂

No, they're not (it would be extremely costly and onerous to do so), and they're not required to keep tape either.

<-------- FCC-licensed broadcaster since age 14

Possibly not a transcript, but someone has to have a recording of it somewhere. Either the station or someone in Atlanta.

Well that's that then.

Of course that doesn't mean that someone else doesn't have a tape but it would be a big pain in the ass to ever find one.

Crap. Any suggestions with regard to the first thread?

The station I was at did. We had a computer system that would record about 3 months at a time, in a fairly low bitrate. The computer would just start recording over the oldest stuff automatically. It's called a logger, and maybe your FCC doesn't require them but in Canada the CRTC does, or at least that was my understanding. I guarantee that any major radio station has a logger system running.

Just to be clear, I didn't mean the station doesn't have a tape, just that they aren't required to. You can certainly ask them. Honestly I have not worked in radio in a long time, but I know we didn't keep tape of our shows.

You can still complain to the FCC about this, even if you didn't hear it. There is a numbskull attorney in Florida who is the leading complainer about "indecency," and yesterday he lodged a complaint with the FCC because he "got it from a reliable source" that the word "sh!t" went out on the Stern show on Weds. I would contact the FCC, the local paper, and whichever of the local TV news stations isn't owned by Clear Channel - they will probably love embarrassing a local CC station.

It's actually not a CC station, but they do have a large corporate parent company that wouldn't be happy about the negative press (Susquehenna/Pfaltzgraf).

Ah, for some reason I was under the impression it was CC (I guess I have them on the brain nowadays). I would definitely complain to the station and parent company too.

Oh, we are....trust me.

My dad is a retired communications lawyer and he owns a radio station in IL. He's out of town at the moment but I can check w/him when he gets back.

EDIT: He can probably compose some nasty letters for you too, since he has nothing but time on his hands now, and has morphed into one of those old guys that spends that time writing nasty letters.
