Question abut banning

ive seen some people that have been banned and im wondering out of the blue what keeps them from loging in?

do they ban the ip or what?

Acutally (and I speak from experience) the Mods just disable the AT account they created. Any attempt to log in (if they don't have a cookie) or post is met with a message saying "You have been banned for - *insert reason here*"

Radeon is somewhat close...

Most bans are that of username, so say I got banned (have 4 times before) they ban the username Paulson, and sometimes even my email address. (This is then transfered into the database, where if the user logged in as paulson tries to post, they can't, because the database server denies permission. Same with email.)

If I'm really a pissant, and they know my IP address, which they do, they can ban it.

If you do get banned, you get a wonderful message that states: You have been forbidden to post/reply or edit a message in these forums.

🙂

You planning on going on a neffing spree?

They'll contact your isp, via the range of the IP, then they'll request that your account be terminated. If the isp doesn't comply, well then AnandTech will ban every IP address from the ISP...

(Ex: AOL)

and I for one, am glad that all AOL'ers are banned. Most are annoying, but some are wholesome. Those wholesome people better get DSL or Cable 🙂

Evadman!!!!
An interesting observation. There are many cities in out wonderfull country that have NO OTHER acess but AOL. If you would happen to move to one of those cities and had to use AOL you would turn into a *********because all AOLers are.
Bleep

People in poor nations aren't going to dial into an access # that will cost them like $10 per minute sorry to say...

I believe he meant that there are places in the United States where the only internet provider without dialing long distance is AOL. This may still be true in some areas.

i don't mean to nitpick, but if they're small enough that aol is the only option, they're not cities. are you talking about those little towns with population 50 or something? yea, i don't consider them cities...
