Question about ZoneAlarm and zones...

how does it keep track of networks? the one i have at home has IP address / site "192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0". my understanding is that this a pretty common setting... i have my home network as a trusted zone. so if i go to some other network that has the same ip address / site (192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0), will that network be trusted too? will it be at all distinguishable from my home network, or will i just have to keep on changing the access level whenever i go somewhere new? thanks!

With DSL always on, I designated my network (same IP Address/Site as you've listed) as an internet zone, but then my computers wouldn't share with each other. I entered the IP addresses for each computer on my network as a trusted zone, which solved that problem. With the network designated as an internet zone, I can hook up to whatever network's handy, and not have to worry about adjusting the settings.

192.168.0.0 is a private address, you will not come across another network on the internet with that subnet, it is not a routable address. When your on the internet, your using a public IP provided by your ISP, not the 192.168.1.0/24 one your using on your lan. Another person using that subnet at home, like me for I use that subnet at home, will also be presenting a public IP provided by their ISP.

Gotta agree with Spunky. The private address is yours and yours alone. I added the 192.168.1.x as a local zone (somewhere in ZA's setup) and went from there. Never a problem. Plus, the whole shebang is hidden from the outside (try running Shields Up! to check it out).

yea i know that much, but what if i go to your home (for example)? then the network will have 192.168.0.0, so will my zonealarm think that your network is trusted (since my home network has the same private address)?

When you connect to another computer external to your LAN, you're not going to 192.168.0.x, you're going to whatever the external Internet address their ISP has designated. The router (be it software or hardware) on that end then uses NAT to determine which of the computers sharing that Internet connection actually gets the packets.

If you were really routing to 192.168.0.x, you'd never get on the Internet at all.

i don't think that's what i mean... for example, right now my laptop is plugged into my router. if i go to your house, and plug it into your router, what will happen?
