Question about XP upgrade on new system

I am running Windows 98 SE on an old (1999) Gateway. What started as minor upgrades to the Gateway turned into a new system. I will salvage some parts from the old system (floppy, DVD-ROM, CD-RW), but everything else is new. I want to install XP to the new system, but I am worried if the XP upgrade software will work. At first, I thought I would have to install 98 onto the new system, and then upgrade to XP, but after some reading my understanding is that I can install with the XP upgrade and I just have to insert the 98 CD during the upgrade to prove ownership. Is this correct? Also, since 98 is located on a Gateway "Operating System Backup CD", will this present problems in proving ownership?

Thanks,

Brian

In my experience, Windows isn't able to realize that you're using a system restore disc for the upgrade. I've never had any luck using my Dell 98SE CD for installing Windows XP. Luckily I have an upgrade copy of every OS released since then so It's never caused a problem. You can try it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

upgrades have always sucked for me. they always hork the registry, and I end up doing a fresh install anyway. so why spend 6 hours when it only takes 2?

I don't know if it would work with a system restore disc, i mean if you just wanted to pop it in there for a second to prove ownership. T_T I kinda doubt it. Might have to just do a system restore and then upgrade from there.

The WinXP CD is bootable and will do a full install of WinXP. If it does not detect that it is upgrading a qualifying product, it will ask you to put qualifying media in the drive.

To the best of my knowledge, the detection algorithm will not recognize and OEM vendors' Quick Restore CD's as qualifying media. So you'll have to install Win98 and then run the upgrade from inside Win98.

I ended up buying the XP Pro upgrade through my university. It was a new install on a new system. Not one time during registration did it ask for any proof of prior ownership. Of course, when I bought it at the university bookstore, the lady couldn't find me as being currently registered (which I am), so she showed me the End User Licencse Agreement and said, "this is what you would have signed if I could have found you. You have to promise me that you are going to classes this quarter."

So, everything looks good. It's installed and activated.

Thanks for your input!
