I know one of the main things that went down against Japan is they aren't allowed to maintain a military.

No.. for the most part, reparations were paid after World War ONE, not TWO.

In fact, reparations were a major reason why we had World War II-- they ruined the Germany economy and created social conditions that made the Germans desperate enough to elect Hitler.

ok- after WWII it was split into parts- the US part, the Russian part, the French and the British.

The Russians became the USSR and forced Germany to be split into East and West. The west part was consolidated into Western Germany. It was give a LOT of money by the US because we wanted to make sure it didnt become commie pinko ;)

Eventually, it was reunited (about 1990)

LOL beat me by about a minute!

Japan was TOTALLY occupied by the US. We had like hundreds of thousands of troops there, and we took away everything military they had. We also forced them to accept a US drafted constitution.

After WWII, America allied itself with Japan to combat communism in East Asia. With America behind Japan, it was harder to bring international pressure against the Japanese. While some of Japan's war time leaders were tried and hung for war crimes, Emperor Hirohito was not. He played a role in Japan's wartime agression and should be hung for the war criminal that he was, but unfortunately, he was not. The U.S. allowed him to remain as a ceromonial head of state. The Japanese constitution was redone and we have the de-militarized Japan that we know today. The U.S. also struck some sort of deal not to persecute the Japanese for any more war crimes in exchange for some top secret military information. The U.S. government received the details of the biological and chemical weapons used by the Japanese unit 731 against the Chinese in Manchuria.

Also, the communist government in China did not aggressively pursue reparations against the Japanese. After defeating the civil war in 1949, the tasks of keeping the Nationalists from regaining the Mainland and rebuilding the country kept the Communists occupied.

Whenever individuals sue the Japanese government for reparations, the Japanese point to some sort of treaty signed in 1962 or 1964 in San Francisco that absolved them from paying reparations.

For the Allied controlled West Germany, there was a different attitude then after WWI. After WW2 the powers at be thought it best to re-invest in Germany and help rebuild the economy in an attempt to prevent what happened after WWI. Looks like it worked pretty well.

Edit = here is a link to get you started.

after WW2, we forced the japanese to start making video game consoles, stereos, and highly efficient yet weakly powered cards.

The Marshall Plan was arguably one of the best investments the US has ever made overseas. It has resulted in 50 years of stability and prosperity in Europe (the parts of Europe which are not stable, i.e. Bosnia, are from the former Eastern Bloc), as well as a hedge against the expansion of communism throughout the '50s-'70s. This is a far cry from the abysmal disaster of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of WWI. (God I love the History Channel)
