Question about WOW realms - PVP vs Normal

So I have just started playing WoW again and I had a question about realms (an issue I was debating with a friend of mine who just started playing about which type of realm was better.)

We currently play on a Normal server (Stormrage) but he says we should switch to a PVP server because they are better.

Can you guys explain the differences between PVP and Normal to me - and why one or the other is better? Thanks!

On PvP, players from the opposing faction can attack and kill you without your permission. On normal servers, people can't attack you unless they ask you to duel and you accept.

They can't attack you even if you go to their city? I saw it happen today!

I thought you said you just started playing WoW again, as in, you've played it before. Surely you should know basic junk like Horde vs. Alliance.

I played only for a month before this - on a normal server.

Don't buy into the "PvP servers are better" crap. Unless you like to be ganked by people 10+ levels higher than you are( or like to do it to others) there really isn't much difference. After taking a pally to 60 on a normal I leveled a Shaman on a PvP server. It wasn't any harder really just took longer because of having to do corpse runs after getting 1 shotted by a few bored 60s that have nothing better to do. Besides, with Battlegrounds around anyone trying to world PvP is just looking to gank you while you're grinding buzzards or something.

That is a good point about the battlegrounds - thanks!

for the most part you're right. However, there is some skill to 1v1 world pvp vs. an equal level to you, especially when they attack you when you're on a mob.

Before the Arena system, there was no real way to go head to head/skill to skill with an equally sized group of players (battlegrounds are for the most part strategic well-timed zergs) without BG objectives getting in the way.

There has to be good reason to play pvp though, because my other friends who play WoW or used to play it all are on pvp servers.

I think PVP servers are more fun just from the fact that you have to be on your toes at all times. Makes things a bit more interesting. Somtimes its a bit frustrating when all you want to do is get into BWL and there are 2 whole raids camping the entrance to BRM...

Some people just like that atmosphere. The "fear" of getting jumped at any time. I enjoyed having to look over my shoulder and I didn't mind being at a disadvantage, but 9 times out of 10 I was getting ganked by 1) Characters way higher level than myself 2) People that waited until my health had taken a hit from fighting a mob before attacking or 3) Blinged-out raid guildies.(Which at 60 translates into them being "higher level" than you)

In the 6 months I played my shaman I can count on 1 hand the amount of "fair" 1v1 fights i had. In those rare moments, yeah it was a blast.Otherwise it was a PITA.

Oh and I played in the wee hours of the morning as well, like in between 12am-6am. I can't imagine trying to quest in a contested area during primetime playing hours.

So it seems that PVP is actually not the place to be from what the last few posts have said - even though in theory the concept is much better?

before the BGs came out PVP servers were kink cause well its where you had PVP, im syre some peeple remember the nonstop southshore V. terran mill battles

town raids and such, man th egood old days, and they are comming back

when blizz put in the PVP thing, AV, AB, WSG they added Disshonorable Kills which essentially killed world PVP, peopel wanted to rank and get thePVP rewards and DHKs wa sa HUGE step in reverse, no one raided towns anymore of fear of DKs, they added them because too many peopel bitched about gettingkilled in a town or people killing Quest Giving NPCS,

it will prob come back in TBC because they removed the DKs

organized world PVP is fun, however if you want to raid and raid seriously its easier on a PVE server because you dont get killed 30 times trying to farm for some herbs or something

Unless your a little baby, dont roll on a PVE realm. If you do there will be nothing to do when your completely bored of raiding/BGs. I get pretty bored of doing instance pvp sometimes and having the option to fly out to a lowbie town and start a fight once in awhile is fun.

so you can single handedly take on 5 players that are 10+ levels higher than you and win, huh? or maybe you're one of those 5, which is more likely.

do people really get enjoyment out of killing and then corpse camping someone that is 10 levels below you and couldn't possibly hurt you? i don't get it, but then again, maybe i'm just not an asshole.

No....I enjoy ganking around low level towns because usually either:

A. the lowbie gets on his main to start a real fight with me
B. the lowbie cries for help which causes 2 or more 60s come fly in

Since my hunter is decked and I play him to the fullest...I have no problem taking on 2-3 60s. Also being an engineer helps :D

I never corpse camp though, thats just fucken lame.

its not pvp, its a game of tag. the one thing i cant understand is you lose nothing when you die. how boring.
