Going to get my wisdom teeth (4 impacted) removed this Friday. And there were quite a few threads on here that I've learned quite a few tips.

I got back from my dentist yesterday. And he was showing me this syringe.... supposely, after 7-10 days, you use this to flush salt water into the wound.

I guess you just find the hole and stick it in and squirt. Now, how hard do you do it? I dont' want to blow those babies out of the water or something.

I don't remember doing that. I don't think you do it into the wound, you just flush the area around the wound/over it just to make sure nothing has the chance to get in it.

If you're not being put under I would classify it as one of the strangest sensations I have ever experienced (removing impacted teeth).

You just point it at the wound and squirt.

It really is no big deal.

Relax, it'll be fine.

Oh, and I was put under, btw.

Simple pressure so you get a steady flow of water. It's basically just irrigating the area since you can't brush it until it heals. Try to act like a WaterPik and you might prevent the wound from closing.

im on day 4 today and it doesnt hurt too much, just a lot of bruising.

i hope you are going to a surgeon and not letting your dentist do it.

had my wisdom teeth removed a couple years ago. they didn't put me under, i actually broke 1 arm of the chair, i think they missed a spot with the novicane. just a steady flow of salt water works, they just told me to rinse really well with it my 1st time. 2nd time i got teeth pulled i told them to put me under. best decision i think....hey..some extra shut eye can't hurt anyways. right?

Yes, Ameesh, I remember :)
Did you get a syringe? I did see an "oral" surgeon, not a dentist. I guess they also remove moles from the mouth area.

The syringe doesn't look like regular diabetic syringe. It's fat and long but the end that you poke is bent and small.
Do you have to mix your own salt water?

Yep, mix your own. They tell ya how to do it. Hopefully you won't be out of commission for too long. The pain went away for me in about 8 hours and I just experienced swelling, no bruising at all.

with good drugs and a good doctor you'll be fine, fallow their instructions to a T, and rinse with salt water every few hours for 7 days even if it just sits in your mouth because you don't want to swish...you don't want to wait 7-10 days to clean the wounds that will lead to infection, a nice gentel push on the syringe is all that is needed, you can practice with it agenst your hand, nothing harder then a gentle "tickle" is all that is needed. one thing that helped me was to make sure the gauze that was in my mouth when changing it was wet, what I did was drink a bit of water before changing, its not the best taste in the mouth but it makes sure that the gauze doesn't stick to the clots and possibly pulling them out.

I was unable / unwilling to eat solid foods for about 5 days, after that period I was fine, stock up on chicken broth and if you don't have a significant other or roomate or somthing, ask a friend if they would be willing to take care of you a little for a 12 hrs, a day, two days after the procedure, as the anasthesia will take a wile to wear off.

I strongly suggest that you ask to be put to sleep for the procedure, when I had mine done, I was awake for the first one, it is EXTREMELY unconfortable to be awake as you hear and feel everything they are doing in your mouth, (not painful) you also taste the blood. I made them stop and put me under after that as was asleep for the last three.

Ask your dentist to write you a persciption for some tylonol 3 or viciden or other perscription pain killer, as it will be neccessary. also when taking pain killers you can take 1 every 4 hours (atleast that was with mine) BUT try and very take the perscription pain killer then when four hours is up, take advil, or tylonol (the regular stuff) then wait four hours assess your pain and eather take another dose of tylonol / advil or the perscription pain killer. Personally I strongly disadvise taking just strait script painkillers as most of them are narcotics and adictive also you want to make sure that you don't overdose yourself on perscription pain killers as the results can be less then entertaining / inviting.

hope that answers most of your questions, I am not a medical expert so please consult with your doctor before taking any / all of this advice. I relive myself of responsiblity from any harm that may be caused by you fallowing these directions. I am merely telling you what I did / happened to me to inform you and not to guide you in your medical practices.

In other words, if you do this and hurt yourself I aint responsible.

umm you shouldn't Poke anything in your mouth with anything...the syringe goes above the wound, no poking involved. sqirt till its gone, reload, go to the next wound, and repeat. again refer to my disclaimer.

I think the salt water mix is 1.5 cups warm water 2tbls salt mixed throughly but Im not entirly sure about that.

I wouldn't worry about the syringe, just swish warm salt water around back there over your wounds vigorously. I would do this a couple times per day.

I remember getting bits of food stuck way back in those holes, I mean these were pretty big holes I had left in my head after the teeth came out. Food particles somehow found their way back into the crevices of the gums, inside where the tooth used to be. Holy cow, when those food particles started to decompose, it smelled and tasted horrible. I had to go back to the dentist so he could flush the area out with that little power flusher they have plus he put me on antibiotics for another week. Gross.

I had mine out all at once and was put out for the procedure.

They didn't give me a syringe just told me to rinse with salt water. ( I made my own....guessing at the measuements...but leaning to the heavy on the salty side )

My wife and her brother had their's out, by different doctors, and both got the syringe.

The Dr. that took mine out stiched the sockets closed, so there were no "holes". However, the doctors that removed my wife's and brother-in-law's teeth did not...so they had holes that food would get cought in and used the syringe to flush out the sockets.

The only drawback I saw from the stiches was that they were disolving stiches and I nearly choked to death on one of them when it only partially came out. (It's amazing what a little tickle will do)

I just had mine taken out yesterday. I feel fine today and I did not really have much pain yesterday either. I had 3 in already so, I guess they just pulled those and the fouth they had to cut out. They did not give me any antibiotics to take nor did they give me a syringe to wash out the sockets. I am just supposed to wash my mouth with salt water and this is it.

I just had two removed at a time (they wouldn't do 4 at once). The first one was the hardest. Only a local, so I got to enjoy the whole thing. They thought the first impacted one could be removed whole. It ended up being worse than they thought, so they had to break it up. Only 50 minutes for that one. The top was a simple grab and pull out. Of course, my luck was that the first one caused nerve damage so the left side of my tounge was partially paralyzed for about 3 months (only got about 90% of feeling back). Plus, I got a dry socket on that one also. I was in such bad shape I could barely open my mouth and chew for a couple of weeks. Man was that so much fun (sarcasm).

The second set (7 months later) went very fast. They broke up the other impacted tooth right away. The top one (garb and pull) ran into problems when some bone came out with it. Now, that was an extremely interesting sound and feeling. It still gives me the shivers (shudder). So, a little bone filing to handle the sharp edges and I was on my way.

I would just like to say that I experienced no pain. Your mind will play tricks on you as you can tell what they are doing and you 'think' there should be pain. If you freak out easy, then get put under. I was just told to gently rinse with salt water. On my second set I was eating pizza that night.... :)

My dentist has been on my case for 2 years now to have my wisdom teeth removed. Being a certified dentalphobe I have been avoiding this like the plague but guess I will have to get it done at some point. Since I am no longer a spring chicken and have borderline high blood pressure I don't know that they will be able to put me under to do it and I cannot imagine being awake for the procedure. Good luck with it.

There is no reason to take them out unless they pose an immediate problem.

My dentist took one
an oral surgeon took 2 impacted at once
still have the one left that came in normally.

I was given local anesthesia for both operations, given a prescription for vicodin once percoset the next time, and instructed to gargle salt water. I took the pain killers the first day as instructed, gargled for a few days, but was eating hot dogs on the second day(just chewed with my head sideways)

All in all...it was no biggie. The pain was moderate immediately after the operation. Then in became a dull pain, I'd rather live with the couple of days of dull pain then take pain killers.
