I've been thinking about buying a laptop. I was just wondering how wireless works... What would I need to buy and do you have to pay when you're somewhere in public and you get a wireless signal.
First, if your laptop has wireless installed already then you won't need additional hardware. However if it doesn't then you will need to buy a wireless card for it. Depending on what your laptop has (in terms of expansion) it would have to be either a MiniPCI (big bonus is it's inside the laptop).
As for connecting to WiFi "Hotspots" WindowsXP should connect to them automatically as they are found. Some will charge a monthly fee for access but lots of places will have access for free. If you want you can look for some Hotspots near you [L=here.]http://intel.jiwire.com/index.htm?iid=ipp_mobiletech+built_spots&">PCMCIA (external adapter)</a>
You will have get an internet account and pay for it to access the web at
wireless hot spots like coffee shops and other locations that offer it.
Remember that it has to be a wireless provider which are more expensive
than dsl and cable setups most of the time. check the web for providers and pricing.
Also remember that this account is seperate from your home account
so you will be paying for two sevices unless you switch your home service
to a wireless provider.
Forgot to mention that a wireless card is the best way to go. if breaks all you have to do is replace it
and you can buy one anywhere as opposed to intergrated wireless that forces you to return your entire
notebook for repair. the money you save buying one without wireless will be enough to buy a card.
