Question about WinXP

Say you buy the OS but have two PCs in the house. Will they make you buy two copies because of WPA or whatever it's called?

<< That's such BS. Oh well, I guess Win98SE, WinME and Win2K Pro will have to do😀 >>

It's not BS. Everyone who has purchased a Windows operating system has contributed to this. Myself included. That is the way Windows has always been (since I can remember anyhow) and it is how everything will be in the immediate future.

Don't know about you but when I get an OS I'll install it on all my PCs. Now with this WPA deal you'll have to activate it.

When I used Windows I realized that installing the software on multiple PCs without purchasing licences for each machine is illegal. But now I dont have to buy licences any longer for my OS of choice so I am happy 🙂

<< I wish I knew Linux😀

Is there a way I can install both OSs and learn Linux at my own pace?
>>

Yes, do a search for info about dualbooting linux and windows whatever.

<< Don't know about you but when I get an OS I'll install it on all my PCs. >>

You realize that's illegal right?

<< Now with this WPA deal you'll have to activate it. >>

There have been cracks for ever beta release, and there will be a crack for the final release.

Just get an anti-activation crack. This is no more illegal than installing one copy of Win2000 on more than one machine.

Or just learn Linux or one of the BSDs (or one of the other good free OSes out there).

If you don't want to deal with it the learn Linux. It's a great and free alternative. Even though I hate WPA though, I must admit that not being able to install it on 2 machines isnt' BS. The OS is a component of the computer. You can't by one video card and use it with 2 machines without first removing it from one of the machines (you can remove XP from one machine and put it on another though).

I'll eventually learn Linux. What does the desktop look like? Is it that far off from Windows? Any tutorials of Linux?

My "desktop" looks like:
$

How do you mean "far off from Windows"?

linuxdoc.org
linuxnewbie.org
Go check ANY decent bookstore...

Funny my desktop looks like userid@machinename$

I feel so cluttered now 🙁 (yes I know how to change it, I want it like that).

XWindows has a lot of different window managers available for it, and can look like a lot of stuff.

I also had (recently changed it) root@machinename#. Now it is just # 😀

<< You guys have any screenies? >>

You mean screen shots? The "$" was not descriptive enough? 😉

Check out themes.org. I recommend the blackbox section.

Here's what I don't get. Lets say I install XP on computer A, and activate it. Then I go install it on computer B, tell M$ that my computer changed, and activate it. Why won't computer A continue to work?

What makes you good enough to be allowed to steal software?

I currently use KDE on my Linux system (and occasionaly Gnome but not too much). It's as user friendly as any Windows system (and looks perty too). Of course my prompt is:

[command number] (userid) current directory>

Example:

[1] (mbgaski) ~>

That's how I like it 🙂.

Wow, I'm surprised you all don't know this.

You can install the same copy of Windows on TWO separate machines, and it is 100% LEGAL...PROVIDED that both machines are never in use at the same time. I believe that MS understands this, and, as such, will allow you to install WinXP on both a desktop machine and a Laptop machine, since presumably, you will use your laptop while away from your desktop, and vice versa. I KNOW that this is legal, and I'm 95% sure that I read that MS will allow simultaneous installs of one license, provided one is on a desktop, and the other on a laptop machine.

Wrong. While they allow this with their Office suite, they do NOT allow this with their operating system.

Yes, I know it's illegal, but I thought this is what WAP is supposed to stop, and it seems very easy to get around.

BTW, I didnt mean that against anyone in particular, just the pirate culture in general 😉

And locks are supposed to keep people out of my house. Can they still get in? Yes. Does that make it ok? No. 🙂
