Question about Windows 2000 Server

I'm planning on building a very cheap system to run Windows 2000 server as a web development testing platform. I might even run MS SQL Server, if I managed to get a decently priced version.

Anyway, I read that Windows 2000 Server's min req. are a 133MHz CPU and 128MB of ram. So I was wondering how would it run on a, say, PII 400 with 256MB. Keep in mind that this server will only be running IIS and MS SQL Server, a pcAnywhere agent (so I can control it trough my system, so I don't even need a monitor) and maybe an antivirus...

It should run fine. You've got at least 256mb of memory in the thing which is the key when you're running on lower end hardware. Careful with pcanywhere. Things that foolw with msgina.dll can cause you grief. Get it service packed and patched before installing pcanywhere. Another stick of memory taking you to 384 wouldn't hurt.

It will run fine with 256mb. And you don't need pcanywhere, I suggest you use Server's built in terminal server component -- much better and faster remote control.

Ok... I'll give that try...

And how about running it on a Pentium II 300MHz with 128MB of ram? Yes, I know it would not be the best thing, but it will only be serving one website at a time, with no more than two clients requesting data.

We've already spent a lot of money in software these year, and we cannot afford new equipment at this point... and I can get this system (PII 300, 128MB, 6GB HD, 2MB PCI vid card) very, very cheap.

all those specs ok BUT 128 mb of ram is truly marginal for a server. however, im right now running w2k server on a p2 266 mhz with 128 meg of ram, and yes, it does run, but im gonna spend the extra $20 and get another 128 meg stick.
youll find out, boot it up, go to
task mgr, its up and running ok with 100 meg in use, 28 meg to spare. wheeee! 🙂
and im in the xact same situation as u, running this as a test platform only. ps-
lets email or pm each other with problems or questions since weve got the same thing
going, and for the same purpose. ------capybara 🙂

Ok, I'm trying to get one of these rigs on MercadoLibre (wich is eBay for latin america, btw):

Intel Celeron 366MHz (I would prefer a P2, oh well)
256MB of RAM
6GB Maxtor HD
8MB Video card (no really important)
No NIC

Pentium II 300MHz
128MB of RAM
6GB Maxtro HD
No video card
No NIC

Pentium II 266MHz
128MB of RAM (actually, 256MB, but the LX motherboard wont recongnize the DIMMs)
30GB WD ATA100 7200rpm HD (BIG plus)
4MB Matrox vid card
NIC

So, the question would be wich one is better, a 300MHz P2/128MB, a 366MHz Celery/256MB or a 266MHz P2/128MB. Al three system are about the same price (~$100 US), so I need to make up my mind...
