I went out and picked up a curl bar and was in the process of ordering some plates online when I stumbled upon 12 sides ones. My roided up looking strong man wanna be looking neighbor almost had a Hernia when I told asked him if I should order them over regular plates. He strong dislikes them but apparently can't verbalize it any further than "they suck!" I don't have a bench atm, and probably won't be getting one anytime soon as I don't have room. For curls it seems to me they might work better. But I'm a n00b here so I have no knowledge just a guess. Googling this didn't help me really at all, I found 2 threads on some muscle forum where the dudes were bitching that 12 sides plates suck and to stay far away from them.

My question is, is there any real reason I should avoid them?

Avoid them.

Why?

1) The big plates when they hit the ground will roll. Sometimes when you put the bar down, the left side will roll forward 2" and the right side back 2". It doesn't seem like much but it gets annoying. especially when you do an exercise that require the bar hit hte ground each rep like deadlifts or pendalay rows.

2) You can not roll the bar around easy. I can kick a 300 pound bar around with my foot. You can't do that with 12 sided plates.

Listen. I have some Olympic plate that is like you describe. I would love nothing more than to sell them off.

Do yourself a favor. Save some money and get some good stuff. Go on craigslist and find an olympic set for $150. Steel plate is just steel plate. new steel and old steel has the same value and utility. Start with this an add more to it over time.

I vote for round as well, easier to move around. Ordering plates online? How much is that gonna cost to ship? I second the recommendation to check out Craigslist, not sure how active it is in your area, but you can find steals on weight lifting equipment on there. Here's just a sample of what I found in my area (power cage, bench, barbell, weights, lat machine, etc for $500 or best offer):

The thing is I don't want them to roll around/move at all, wouldn't that be the plus of the 12 sided plates? I have very limited space in my room so the bar will never move more than a couple inches.

If you don't want them to roll, go for it. I find it annoying that during deadlifts I have trouble getting the bar perfectly parallel against my shins with the wall/mirror/rack; usually the edges of the plates on each side don't line up exactly. While minor, it's easier mentally to not have to adjust yourself slightly at the top of the lift.

Hexagonal plates are coated with estrogen. Doubly so if they have handles.
LMAO!

My plates are round, have no handles, and are coated in rust.

If you have amazon prime you can order plates and have them shipped two day for free. Even 100lb plates. Although they dont have the plates hes talking about.

All my kettlebells were shipped two day for free. The FedEx guy hates me for that...

But yeah if you can find stuff on Craig's List or at a place like Play It Again Sports, you will save some money. Other than that Amazon and Walmart Online are cheaper than any sporting good store for weights/dumbells/kettlebells. And you get free two day shipping with Amazon Prime or free shipping with Ship to Store with Walmart.
