Question about wake on LAN

How does this feature work? I have Vista on my main PC to share media. I sometimes watch movies from this share, over the network, on my PS3. My PC is set up to go into suspend mode after an hour of inactivity.

Will the PS3 be able to wake up my PC if I want to watch content stored on the PC?

There is a lot of confusion terms like Wake On LAN, Sleep, Standby, Hibernation.

People tend to relate to them on language basis rather than to understand the technology behind these terms.

Your PS3 would Not do any thing if your PC is configured to Wake On LAN or Hibernation.

If it is in Sleep/Standby it can be set to wake on any LAN Traffic.

Standby, Hibernation, Wake On Line? - http://www.ezlan.net/standby.html

Do i have to do anything special to configure it to wake up on any lan traffic?

If i do that, is there a danger of random LAN traffic waking my computer for no reason, or does that generally not happen? Would it have to be traffic directed specifically at my sleeping PC?

Usually the computer's NIC would have in its drivers configuration an entry that has to be checked to indicate the Wake on any Traffic.

Some computers might also have an entry in the BIOS related to this issue that have to be set correctly.

Bringing this thread back.

What do I have to do so that my computer doesn't go to sleep while I'm streaming music to my PS3?

I would also like to be able to wake the computer if the PS3 wants to play music.

I want to be able to wake the computer from my laptop, in case I want to remote into it, or access a file share that is hosted on the desktop.

If you set it to wake on network traffic then any random traffic may wake it up. There is another option to wake on lan using a magic packet that will cause it to wake up but not sure how you'd configure a PS3 to do that. Thus, I'm interested as well.
