Question about Viewsonic VX900 LCD monitor...

Ok first off I'm a little confused as to what the very very important specs on an LCD monitor are...and the FAQ didn't really clarify anything for me.

So what are the most important things?

VX900 specs link...

I looked at the dell site, where everyone says their ultrasharps are good...but couldn't find very detailed specs. So can someone look at the link and let me know if this monitor will play games fine without ghosting and such?

That depends on how well you see ghosting.

There is a 192T review on the frontpage, if you haven't seen it.

Well the thing is as a suprise my dad bought me this monitor...I kinda came home and found it in my room. So I want to know if its sufficient for gaming or not...because if it is I'll keep it. Otherwise I would exchange it for a model that works!

In that case, and if you can return it opened, hook it up and you will know.

Don't forget to give us a report. And that is a really nice dad you have, is it your birthday or something.

Thank Jzilla, looking at the review for the 192T the specs on my monitor for the most part are the same, there are a few that are better such as the contrast ratio which is 600:1 (typ).

So I guess my main question is how noticeable is ghosting with a 25ms time and how long does the effect last? Because there is nothing in the 19" screen domain that has a 16ms response time (that I've seen). If the ghosting is really that bad I guess I would downgrade the screen size to 17" and get a 16ms monitor.

*Edit* An idea of the games I play are JK 2, SWG, Doom 3 (its coming soon), Half Life 2 (sooner...), Battlefield 1942, Ravenshield.

Don't believe the specs.

Speaking for myself, I can see slight ghosting on a Samsung 172T which has 25ms. But I don't know if I would see it when playing.

This may be a bad idea, but... Here they have a review of the 25ms Samsung 191T. Download the Matrix video (needs Divx), and forward to about 40 seconds. When the girl (can't remember her name) moves away from the wall/stone pillar I can see her head ghost. This is what I would call ghosting/blur. I don't know if the digicam has any role in this as to showing more ghosting. But even 25ms monitors are not the same, and every 25ms monitor don't exhibit the same level of ghosting. A lot of people on various forums can see ghosting on the 191T btw. This is just to give you an idea, and maybe it was a bad idea.

But if you can return it opened, then go ahead. But check it before opening the case. I don't think your dad will be angry about this if you explain why you want to exchange it.

I watched that clip just now I could barely see the ghosting...I would rather not give up the bigger screen unless its drastically noticeable...and completely ruins gameplay. So exactly how bad are ghosting effects in good 19" LCD displays w/ a 25 ms response time?

Is it game stopping?
Something you have to train the eye to see?
Or just a minor nuisance?

It's really hard to say. As I said ghosting is a very subjective thing. But my guess would be that most people (not hardcore gamers) would find it just a minor nuisance on a 25ms monitor. I have read plenty of post were people have said that they could see ghosting, but that it didn't bother them while playing.

But if you couldn't see the ghosting, then I would say go for it. But don't blame me if you don't like it.

Another, and better, option would be to go to a shop and check out all their lcds. Then you can get an idea whether or not ghosting annoys you.

I apoligize if this sounds vague, but it is really hard to guide you on this. But to play it safe, I would check out lcds in a shop.

And don't forget to tell you dad how great he is.

Dont believe Viewsonic's specs. If you want to fill him in JZilla go for it, however my comments about Viewsonic are still relatively under embargo.

Viewsonic is infatuated with stating false contrast ratios to improve sales when comparing a monitor in the same price and performance range. I didnt know they did it to this monitor aswell...only thought it was done with the 16ms screen.

I'm happy with mine. Some ghosting, but only when things get intense. The only thing I didn't like is the highest resolution on 1280X1024. The types of games I run are UT2k3, IL-2, Nascar2k3. I was watching the Extreme DVD Terminator 2 last night and was most impressed. Even at a 3.14 o/c, it still paused between chapters and the S/P DIF didn't work on the player they have you install, but aside from that it was very impressive. Definitely the best PQ of the LCDs at the local BB and CC. Heck, we didn't get presents at all for most of our b-days growing up, you're lucky your father is cool.

Hey Jzilla, figured I'd post and let you know how this thing works!

First off I personally think the image on this display is clearer than my CRT :)

Second off, there is some video lag and choppy...when running Jedi Knight II on this PC. But it really could be my PC because I got JK II graphics stats pretty high, and at 1280 * 1024 resolution...on a AMD Athlon 500 mhz, 96 MB RAM, GF 2 MX 32 MB!

So I'll post a follow up when I get my new PC later this week, which will eliminate the possibility of it being related to the computer.

It should be much more clear than a crt, unless you have a highend crt. If you are experiencing lag and choppynes its probably your system.

Athlon 500. A trip down memory lane. I had an Athlon 600 that I used for 3 years. It got retired last summer.

Edit: Would your dad be interested in adopting me?

That choppiness is definately the computer.
