There's someone on our car forum that is seeing the background as black, when it's supposed to be white. He said that he's using Internet Explorer. There's only one setting for the forum layout, so I can't figure out what's going on.

Here's a look at what he sees.

Here's what the forum is supposed to look like (with the white background in the text area).

Any idea what's causing this member to view the forum with the background all black?

Thanks!

Sal

Looks like he's missing a style sheet. The clearest clue is that the fonts are different (and his look like defaults). That and the page is just missing stuff that would normally be tweaked via style sheets.

First step is to clear the cache and refresh.

Thanks for the reply! What exactly do you mean by clear the cache and refresh?

Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Delete Files -> Delete all offline content -> OK

That should do the cache for you. Then have him view the page again (refresh if he's still on it at that point). My next step would be doing some sniffing to see if his browser is actually requesting the style sheet and actually receiving it, but that may be too complicated.

That's what I thought that you meant. I wanted to be sure though. I've always called it deleting the temporary internet files, but I guess you can call it a cache.

Is it called a "cache" or is that what you know it as? I'm just wondering because if I go into Internet Options under the General tab (you can also get to it from the Control Panel -- as you most likely know), it says "Temporary Internet Files". I don't see any mention of the word "Cache".

I don't mean to be a smartass. I just want you to know why I wanted clarification by what you originally said. :)

Between the two of us, I'm the one being the smartass ;) I don't use Internet Explorer but all the browsers on my system (Firefox, Camino, Opera, Safari) all use the word 'cache' and the other one I use occasionally, Konqueror, probably does as well. :) "Temporary Internet Files" is a misnomer anyways. They're not from just anywhere on the internet, they're from the web (well, I guess possibly ftp too, but nobody uses IE as an ftp client).

Now that we've got that straightened out, do report back with results when you get him to clear the so-called "Temporary Internet Files" and refresh. :)
