Ok so ive watched 10 hours worth of the entire series one of CSI, now ive got something stuck in my head...

Please re-assure me that vegas is no-where near as violent as its made out to be...

Ive heard from other places that there are a lot of rapes and violence there, is this true?

Television is all fact. :)

Seriously, though, I'm having second thoughts about going to Japan after watching Kill Bill.

No i know television is bull, CSI is set in Vegas for its effect, but ive read news reports with an alarming amount of death and rape there, although it all seems to revolve well outside the strip im still curious...

No. I grew up there. Haven't watched CSI, but the area where my family lives is very similar in appearance to any suburban Southern California neighborhood, heck, the crime rate there might have be lower than it is here in Irvine where I'm at college.

I've never been there but I just figure that tourist traps are inherently safe.

My mom lives in Vegas and the worse thing she's told me about is those 311 skin head kids.

My bro saw it, said it was a great movie. Kinda like a "Before Sunrise" in the East.

Yeah, I've been out of town for a few months, so I really haven't heard too much about them, but just like when traveling to any city, and you don't know your way around, stay in tourist areas. I don't want to paint a utopian picture of the city, but the Strip, ceratinly is safe, Downtown is okay if you stay on freemont street, but when you get too far away, it is just another run down city neighborhood. Except for the bad parts of downtown, (& the North Las Vegas area) there are few places that I would feel unsafe walking on the streets at night.

Oh, and the police are VERY tough on crime in the city. You don't want to get on the wrong side of the law, especially when it comes to tourists, you will get your ass beaten.

Vegas was built by mobsters, what do u expect. the LV PD let tupac get shot in broad night light and the perpetrators just cruise away, the cops didnt even try to go after them. but i'm sure police departments around the US are less racist now after they've made the world safer with their racial profiling

Isn't this a bit of a non-sequeter? Besides, I can assure you, the cops are assholes to people of all races , pretty much everywhere.

I call TROLL.

vegas is the fastest growing city in America, and there will always be an increase in the amount of violence and crime when taken into context..

I don't live there but been ther multiple times on vacation. Never really worried about my safety...

But there is very "dirty". Lots people trying to hand you pr0n pamphlets and stuff, so its lying all over the ground and on walls and stuff. Funny thing is, I didn't remember any of that when I was a kid, and was shocked when I went back a few months ago to see all that. lol.

Relatively safe, crime wise, but dangerous if walking as a pedestrian on the strip due to vehicular traffic. Lots of drunk drivers, taxi's who think they own the road to themselves, and tourists who don't pay attention to road safety.

it must be safe, or my dad wouldnt have moved us there for 6 months in my early childhoold when I was 5...

What frequent rapes and violence ? I guess that I dont get enough local news to my southeast Vegas cave. There was man from the UK that was killed by a crazy homeless man in front of the Desert Inn back in early 90's. Has this story scared you folks in thr UK from visiting Vegas ?

Been to Vegas many times without incident. But, cabbies will tell you where it is unsafe for tourists. As one earlier poster indicated, the area off Freemont street should be avoided. I think they have gang problems like elsewhere. Cabbie also says that cops really protect tourists, but not when they crosswalk on the strip. According to him, the pedestrian is assumed at fault if they get hit and are walking out of a cross walk or against the light.

Yeah, basically you shouldn't be dumb enough to jaywalk, especially on the busy strip. If you get hit, you are probably an idiot and won't get any sympathy. It is like crossing a highway. You don't do that. I heard the tale of this guy at my dad's company, who was out in a company truck and some overweight woman darted out between two cars. The guy slammed on his brakes and only hit her lightly (minor concussion or somesuch) but the police fined her for jaywalking, and I think the insurance company charged her for the dent in the truck's hood.

So the moral of the story: Don't be an idiot and jaywalk. Especially across a busy busy street. You are doubly an idiot on the strip because almost every intersection now has a pedestrian bridge to cross over the streets.
