Question about using public charcoal grills.

I just returned from a picnic with about 10 other coworkers. Played football, frisbee, chilled, swam, and checked out the hot chicks in bikinis, no pics.

So here is the situation. We get there, and we have all the supplies to start cooking, besides one thing of course, aluminum foil to cover the grill surface. Now me personally, I said screw it because I normally don't use foil on these little public grills anyways, so I started laying down the charcoal and loading it up with lighter fluid. Immediately 2 people come over and say "where's the aluminum foil", so I respond with, "bah, we don't need aluminum foil, the heat will burn all the crap off". So these 2 people start to get seriously pissed that I would even fathom not using aluminum foil on a "disgusting, filthy" public grill. But mind you, there was nothing particularly dirty about this grill, and as a matter of fact looked cleaner than ones I've cooked on in the past.

One of them went so far as to put the cooking on hold for 20 minutes while they went down the road 5 miles to get aluminum foil. My reaction of course was, "You fvcking pussies!" So was it ridiculous that they refused to eat something cooked on a public grill without aluminum foil, or do you feel the same way.

i woulda taken a metal brush with me before i took foil, scrape the crap off, otherwise you should have just broiled everything and kept it warm on the way out

btw, my dad *never* cleans his grill, ever. its disgusting and i wont eat food cooked on it because it all has *soemthing* sticking to it

I'm sure it would be quite safe as long as you ensure there is sufficient heat before grilling. Given a choice, I would still prefer cooking with aluminum foil, though

"Bad" stuff get's toasted at 180 degrees. A typical grill will run at anywhere from 250-500 degrees.

They are pussies.

1.) it's rediculous you have no pics if you knew you were going into a situation with hot chicks in bikinis

2.) I would have no qualms with eating a burger off a public grill.

I'd use a wire brush to get the nasty carbon off the grill, but I'd not use aluminum foil. The whole point of grilling is to get charcoal flavor in your food...not to get it toasted using aluminum foil.

I wouldn't want to rely on them in the wilderness :p

Btw you could ask if they have any tinfoil hats lying around you could use.

Well that's what I'd usually do, let it heat up for 15-20 minutes, long enough to let the gunk burn down, and then I just swipe it with a paper towel. I mean, preferring foil is one thing, but holding up lunch because you refuse to eat a burger that's not cooked on foil is something completely different.

A good Wire Brush ftw

I would have let the asshat that came back with the aluminum foil take over all the cooking.

Whatever is on it couldn't be any worse than the raw meat you're putting on it, and you mean to eat that, so what's the big deal?

Dude, if there's no open flames the towel isn't going to magically combust in the 10 or so seconds it's touching the hot iron.

Exactly. And this also came from the couple that just mowed down half a bag of Doritos and a liter of soda before this all even went down.

You can't stop the idiocy of others.

Tell them about this thing called an autoclave used in hospitals.

If its wet or soaked with oil its a great way to lube your grill.

Just dump lighter fluid on the grill itself and light it up. Should kill off any bad things on there. And in the time it takes the charcoal to heat up and such, it should kill off everything. But if there's physically things stuck to the grill, then you should at least find a stick to scrape them off.

That is a bad idea. Even after completely burnt off, the lighter fluid WILL leave a residual taste on the iron, not good.

Usually I use an onion to clean off the grill when its nice and hot. cleans it off nicely, no extra stuff to stick to your meat and it gets more of the little bits that a brush will leave behind.

Take a big fresh (juicy) onion chop it in half, then stick a fork in it and smear it along with the grain of the grill, it molds to the grill and grabs all the crud (top and sides) and leaves it oniony fresh... use the other half if there is more to clean. btw i hate onions, but not onion powder, go figure and this to me doesnt leave a bad taste on the meat.

btw a grilled on foil burger... isnt it fried more than grilled?

Interesting...but it's a waste of a perfectly good onion! :(
