Question about using a Slocket

A friend of mine wants to upgrade an Intel 440BX2 MB by adding a faster processor. This is a slot MB with a PII 450 in it. I am not sure if this will work(I think it will), but will a slocket allow him to run a processor that is faster than what the MB is supposed to run? According to the MB specs, it will run up to a pIII550 w/512cache. The MB will run 66 and 100mhz.

Will a slocket let him run say a celeron 850 or a PIII850?


Before anyone suggest that he just invest in a new MB and processor, I have already suggested it and he doesn't want to do that. He just wants to slap a faster processor in and go.

That's too bad, he could do a lot better for not much more cash.
 
Yeah I know, but he is a total NOOB. He doesn't want to open the case if he don't have to, so this is the easiest way to give him a little boost.

I wanted to get him a Tbird and MB, but then he will need a new Power Supply too. He is not ready to commit to that kind of upgrade. Swapping a processor and making a few jumper connections is almost more than he can handle.
 
The 440BX mobo will support any Intel CPU w/ 100 FSB excl. the tualatins. If u get the FCPGA slocket, u'll be able to run coppermine CPU (Pentium & Cele) up to 1.1 Ghz.

What mobo u r using ? U need the latest bios from the manufacturer.
 
As stated so well above. Need the latest bios and a slotkit/cpu and some luck. It's getting close to not being worth it if you are buying the cpu without being sure.

If you have the exact mb model, post a question here to try and find someone who's done it.
 
The MB is an Intel SE440BX-2 Motherboard

Acording to this page it will only support up to 600 mhz. Newer revision of the board support up to 850mhz.

When you use a slocket, does it override the jumper setting on the MB? Like if the MB is set to 4.5x100(450) and the slocket is set to 8.5x100(850) will it show up as 850 or 450 when you post?? This is where I get lost.
 
don't think slotkets have multiplier settings. usually voltage, some frequency identifiers, and maybe cpu type fcpga ppga
 
Can't override Intel multipliers if you wanted to..They are factory locked. But, the higher multiplier given from the proc "should" override whatever the board is set to. Also, since it is an Intel board,overclocking the FSB is usually not an option. I know that you can use an 850mhz Coppermine/Celermine on ASUS boards w/440bx chipset (P2b-f, P3B-F) with latest BIOS'es, but it will ultimately depend on what kind of support Intel has kept up with your particular board.
