I just bought a new computer and it has an 80GB HDD and 256MBs of RAM and I am wanting to upgrade the RAM to 2x512MB of Corsair Valueselect and probably a 200-300GB HDD

The computer is a Compaq Presario SR1603WM and I was wondering if i just take the RAM out of it and put the new RAM in if it will just boot up or if i need to do anything else?

Also could i just buy a 300GB IDE HDD and plug it in and put it as a slave drive and boot up? After that what should i do to set it up? Should I make it so that when the 80GB fills up then it starts using the 300GB or should i make it so like program files and windows files are stored on the 80GB and everything else on the 300GB? Also whenever i decide how i want it is there a program that I can use to do it?

it takes sdram so all you do is put it in and you're good to go.

For the hard drives i would use the 80gb for the os install and put everything else, including the paging file, on the other hard drive.

That's the big idea... Just swap the RAM, and it should be fine... (given that it is compatible of course...)

The 300GB disk can be perfectly connected as a Slave drive...

A possible solution is indeed to put everything Windows etc. needs on the 80GB disk (you could make a partition on that one too, say 10GB for all the Win stuff, then you'll have some 60GBs left for audiofiles or photos or whatever you like...)
