The extensive Vista book I bought when someone recently gave me a disc of Vista Ultimate 64 SP-1 Upgrade states that one cannot upgrade from a 32bit XP to 64bit Vista. I wonder about this since I'm currently running XP Pro (32 bit) and plan to upgrade to this Vista Ultimate 64 when I upgrade my hardware in June as I'll raise my RAM from 3GB to 8GB. By this I mean upgrade immediately over a clean install of XP.

Same book says also that Vista 32 can use more than 4GB. I thought you needed a 64bit OS for this.

if i am reading your question right you are asking if you can do clean install of vista with a upgrade DVD? and yes you need 64 bit OS to see more that 3gb of memory be it XP or vista

I know about that. What I'm asking is if my 64bit Vista Upgrade disc will not allow me to install from a 32bit XP, that is upgrading from 32bit to 64bit.

The book is wrong. Vista will *Display* whatever's installed. But actually using it is a different matter. Your understanding that you need a 64 bit OS to use all of that RAM plus installed devices is correct.

Yes you can upgrade. I upgraded my gf's computer from a clean install of XP Home 32bit to Vista Ultimate 64bit Upgrade disc because I could get it for only 50$ through my college. So the 32-64 transition works fine. Sees and uses all 4GB of ram.

I beileve you saying you can use it as a basis for an upgrade check, you can not upgrade xp32 to vista64 in place. All 32/64 upgrades require a full reinstall.
