question about ubuntu on usb stick

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. Are you talking about the boot menu when you boot to the flash drive? If so, I /think/ you want to pick that, and if you've selected persistent storage in your setup, changes will be saved to the flash drive.

I've never really run it that way. If I have a flash install I want to keep for awhile, I boot to a flash drive, then do a regular install to another flash drive, and partition it as I would a HD. I treated the flash drive exactly the same as a HD.

im trying to install the OS to the flash drive. i have the iso on cd. i just want to be able to take the installation anywhere and have the settings come with the drive. So yes i want to treat the usb flashdrive as a HD partition to install to.

the UUI seems to be able to skip a few steps and just puts a bootable copy to run directly off of with persistent settings.

Ok. I don't know how that works for long term stability, and usability. One of my concerns would be using the FAT file system. It's kind of delicate, and may not hold up well over time. For live installs like that, I've only used them for temporary installs; just a as I would a CD. If /I/ were to do it, I'd boot to the CD, then go through a full install to the flash drive, partitioning and everything. I don't know that it's the best way, but I know it works.

Give the UUI install a try, and see how it works for you. It's definitely easy, and it may be perfect for your uses. Just make sure you keep any important data backed up in case something bad happens.

im not really expecting full stability, just something to test with.

the main thing i am kinda worried about is video driver compatibility.

That's perfect for just testing. What video card do you have? Nvidia and Intel tend to be reliable. AMD can be hit/miss, but I think it can generally be beaten into submission.

amd unfortunately, but i have a really old gf7900 if necessary as a fall back. i just really wanted to avoid yanking parts out if i could avoid it.

after booting from cd it looks like there is no install to usb option in 12.4, maybe i misread the notes. the UUI seems to have set up the drive, took a fair bit longer than i was expecting to write out the files ~15-20 min.

need to start messing with the bios to get the boot order to usb first.
