Question about Tomato/DD-WRT

One of the room mates in the house is sucking up a lot of bandwidth by torrenting. I have asked him to at least limit his bandwidth and connections, but it is still making for a very unpleasant internet experience in the house regarding Netflix streaming and XBOX Live (poor video quality and lag).

Are there any routers out there that can limit the amount of connections to a certain MAC or IP, or even limit the upload and download bandwidth.

Right now we are using my NETGEAR WGR614v9 and it lacks a lot of features.

Also, is it possible to have two separate internet connections running into one house? So maybe he could pay for his own damn internet and doesn't keep sucking up ours...

*update*
Nevermind, called COX and they said they can't accommodate two modems in one house (currently).

first off, tell your room mate to stop fvcking around and respect his peers.

secondly you can limit it with wireless G routers, the N routers will have way more advance features with scheduling and cut offs.

he'll probably find out though that his tors are not dl'ing as fast, in which case, you can just stop paying for it and get wireless city-wide national coverage internet from AT&T or Verizon, etc.

Well, he freaked out last night when I shut off his internet. I told him we were getting horrible load times, bad pings, and terrible quality on Netflix. I said it worked fine after I disconnected him. He said "but don't we have a lot of bandwidth?" then I said it was the sheer amount of connections coming into his PC that was sucking it all up.

I was wondering if you maybe had any specific routers I should check out with good features? Maybe ones I could pick up at a big box store (Best Buy, Nebraska Furniture Mart, etc). I was reading here about QoS on routers and how I can prioritize certain applications with firmware upgrades. Is the Linksys WRT54GL still a good router choice to get? If so, I am really considering getting one.

Dlink DIR-615 is supposed to have good QoS, it has the Ubicom streamengine chip in it, I'm pretty sure.

Any thing but the GS.

The GL is OK.

This is much better for similar price, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-134-_-Product

Or you can save few $$ with this one (currently with rebate), http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-023-_-Product

big thumbs up to the buffalo equipment. ive got some that has been running for years without a hitch. cant remember what the stock firmware will let you do for QoS, i know tomato's seems to work pretty well for me at home.

The Buffalo looks sweet -- looks like it also supports the Tomato firmware I want to use.

You guys think its a good one? The WHR-HP-G54?

Yep...HP-G54 is always the default recommendation for people who don't want/need N. been running 3 flashed with DD-WRT (1 router, 2 AP's) for years without problems.

I'll be ordering one of these momentarily...the question I have now is...

Can Tomato or DD-WRT limit the number of connections (not just bandwidth) to a certain IP so I can put an end to this torrent bull shit without completely shutting off his internet access? Or at least completely disable P2P/torrent programs?

I ended up buying a Linksys WRT-54GL on sale at NewEgg. Not sure what version it is, or how much on board flash memory there is, but hopefully it will be able to handle a new firmware with QoS. The torrenting has gotten out of control and hopefully the new router will be great.

It'll probably show up tomorrow or the day after...pretty excited to finally have some lag free gameplay on Live.

Yap, its Wireless is much better than the 54GL.

With DD-WRT, their features and menus are the same, but the Buffalo's Radio is much better.

You shouldn't need new hardware. Your annoying and disrespectful roommate can configure his torrent client to throttle downloads/uploads during the day so others can use the connection. At night, he can have it automatically use more bandwidth. If he doesnt do this he's either a moron, a jerk, or both.

Upstream bandwidth is the real problem usually. Setting your torrent client to upload at anywhere near your maximum makes for a very unpleasant browsing experience. This also applies to not having a maximum speed set, which is very very bad.

Just kick his ass out and find a new roommate. ;)

Does µTorrent have a scheduler to stop torrents at certain hours?
Yes, in the options. It allows you to set an upload/download speed, and set it to Limit, go full speed, seed only, or stop torrents altogether by the hour/day. You can also make it turn off DHT during hours you set to "Turn off."
